Oh thanks now I've got the song stuck in my head

I'd be very happy to be wrong about this! More cheap ways of storing free energy from the sun are always good.

There have been tests at various scales, it can definitely work! For pumped hydro the issue is generally finding sites. There are losses but that's ok to an extent if the energy was just going to be lost anyway. But batteries keep getting better so the economics are hard to compete against.

Yeah, not a lot of mountains around there. But for lifted weights (without a handy hill nearby) the construction cost per kWh of capacity is huge compared to how cheap batteries have become.

Oh definitely, I was just talking about gravity storage specifically.

Me too, but my understanding is that it's hard to get the capacity we need with eg pumping water up to reservoirs - there just aren't enough high lakes. I think a good option here (where there's lots of hydro power) is to leave as much of the water in the dams as cover for when there's no sun/wind.

Pointing out that AI is 33% better at spotting cancer is missing the main point of the thread: that she doesn't trust the company not to misuse the data.

(33% better! Did AI write this??? 😁) The problem she's pointing at isn't specific to AI, it's that AI is enabling/exacerbating the worst tendencies of capitalism.

Graham Hancock is definitely part of the right-wing radicalisation funnel, my former friend (who has since gone full-on raving race science) tried to get me to read all of his books on the pyramids and other mysteries about 20 years ago

Every school should have solar panels installed.
Every classroom should have a circulating HEPA filter installed.

Fantastic news David! I love your work but I've held off subscribing because I didn't want to pay money to Substack. If I subscribe now will it still go through their payment system, or should I wait until next week?

Anyway as a former teacher and a librarian and a parent of a kid with the learning disability, no amount of tinkering with junior readers is going to fix the literacy problem. PAY TEACHERS. INVEST IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION. INVEST IN PRENATAL AND POSTNATAL CARE.
