I'm running through the thread with Big Island of Hawaii suggestions. Walking and Hiking are awesome here. There are all sorts of amazing trails. Like up at the Volcano national park you can take Devastation Trail. Here near my home there is the Pololu Valley trailhead. Google image search both.

This was my suggestion. I think the Big Island of Hawaii has a lot to offer, including a population that thinks they aren't really part of the United States. I have guest accomodations on the northern tip of the Island, where you can see Maui peeking through the clouds.

As someone trying to reduce my sugar intake, I have been working with making congee with steel cut oats instead of rice. It's worth a try if you're having blood sugar issues after eating rice porridge.

I know you are my age because we're both 1972 babies but you look at least 10 years younger than me here! And I have been doing all the health things. Looks like estrogen is the winner.

We have longer lives so now we get the luxury of longing for death for the final quarter of our lives. The people tracking progress forgot to check for fulfillment, satisfaction, and happiness. Life span is not a factor of progress when all it does is extend your window of consuming products.

The thing that anyone on the side of progress likes to argue is that we're living longer and have access to way more luxuries than any of our ancestors.

So now we are a culture of convenience and comfort and we've forgotten that growth comes from struggle and sacrifice.

The largest destruction of natural resources is happening under the watch of the people who no longer think a mountain is sacred or that ancestors dwell there, but rather we can strip mine it for rare earth minerals.

When is the last time you watched a sunset? When did you have time for that?

Science, Reason, Logic are the new gods and they have no place for mountain spirits, forest nymphs, mermaids or elves. We spent the last couple centuries de-animating matter so no longer is there any anima in the world.

This allowed us to turn everything formerly sacred into commodities.

Basically, I grew up with a colonized consciousness. I was taught to look down on cultures that worshipped ancestors, or were somehow 'primative' like aborigines. I was taught that ancestors have nothing to offer me, that the ancients are not wise and there is no wisdom to be had.

This is not the right place to talk about stuff like this because you only have a short amount to say something.

What happens when the culture you are born into no longer serves you? Do you change the culture or do you move on?

Just we can type poo onto social media and fling it much farther than our ancestors. (Bluesky does seem to have some fun but mostly still poo flinging)
