Gedenktafel aus Metall mit der Überschrift "Historische Stätten der Chemie". Der Text würdigt die Chemiker Ernst Beckmann (1853–1923) und Wilhelm Ostwald (1853–1932), die in dem Gebäude forschten, lehrten und wohnten. Beckmann war Professor für Angewandte Chemie und Direktor des entsprechenden Labors von 1897 bis 1912. Ostwald war Professor für Physikalische Chemie und leitete das II. Chemische Laboratorium der Universität Leipzig von 1887 bis 1897. Die Tafel beschreibt Beckmanns Arbeiten zur Molekulargewichtsbestimmung und der Beckmannschen Umlagerung sowie Ostwalds Mitbegründung der Leipziger Schule der Physikalischen Chemie. Erwähnt werden weitere bedeutende Chemiker wie Svante Arrhenius, Walther Nernst und Berthold Rassow. Das Gebäude war zwischen 1944 und 1950 einzig unzerstörtes chemisches Universitätslaboratorium. Es diente später Karl Friedrich Bonhoeffer und Leopold Wolf zum Neubeginn. Die Enthüllung erfolgte am 15. Mai 2009 im 600. Jubiläumsjahr der Universität. Herausgeber ist die Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh).
Ich arbeite im selben Gebäude, in dem vor über hundert Jahren schon Wilhelm Ostwald und Ernst Beckmann gearbeitet haben, zwei große Namen der Chemie 🧑🔬

Luo et al. from Tsinghua University #China report in #JACS a novel method to create enantioenriched α-amino aldehydes using photocatalysis. Through this strategy α-amino aldehydes with up to 93% ee could be synthesised.

The total synthesis of aleutianamin was enabled by a new convergent coupling reaction.
J Tuccinardi and J Wood from Baylor University ( #USA), introduced a strategy to synthesize the core of aleutianamine. Their study in #JACS involved a vinylogous Mukaiyama-Michael reaction cascade using two previously unknown coupling partners.

Calculations optimise the total synthesis of natural products by addressing challenges in the 1,5 HAT key reaction.
Computer-aided synthesis: R. Shenvi (@shenvi.bsky.social) and C. Li published in #Nature the synthesis of 25 picrotoxanes. Their 1,5-HAT key reaction was challenged by β-scission, therefore DFT based calculations helped to design usable intermediates.

Total Synthesis papers are amongst the most downloaded, which is a measure of importance & broad interest. Yet it’s not uncommon to have >10,000 downloads with <50 citations. If I were obsessed with my h-factor, I’d stop publishing total syntheses now. But you gotta what you truly love doing!
