AOC: We have a future to fight for, and we're either going to do that together or you're going to be left behind. It's not about Progressive. It's not moderate, it's not liberal. This is about do you understand the assignment of fighting fascism right now? And the assignment is you come together…

A chart from the great @bennsteil.bsky.social — showing how US importers did, in fact, absorb most of Trump’s tariffs at first.

But not for long.

Jumped back in on TSLS calls a few weeks ago, near all time high, but went deep into 2026 this time.

Similar rationale. Proxy for overall market overvaluation and hedge.

Layoffs Already Higher Than for Any Full Year Since 2020 Announced US job cuts by quarter

It’s been harder than normal to get a grasp on the US labor market lately, with several agencies that produce key economic data, including the Bureau of Labor Statistics, going dark during the government shutdown. Even before that, President Donald Trump’s efforts to downsize the US government left holes in the sprawling federal statistical system. But private datasets have helped fill in some of the gaps.

A report from outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas showed almost 950,000 US job cuts this year through September, the highest year-to-date total since 2020—and that was before the heavy October run of announcements. (Excluding that first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, US job cuts in the first nine months have already surpassed full-year layoffs for every year since 2009.) When something is almost the worst since the Great Recession, North says, “that’s not a very encouraging number.”

Congrats to everyone who put Republicans in charge "for the economy," the first three quarters of 2025 already had more layoffs than any of the years in which Biden or Obama was President except 2009 (when Dems were still cleaning up the prior Republican mess).

More BTIG:

“.. we saw a similar set-up into the ’99-‘00 peak. As $NDX saw its final high in March '00, 60% of the Consumer Staples sector was making a 52-wk low. Utilities and Healthcare were also extremely weak.” 👀
