Sure, they might need to deal with some legal requirements on caption formats - but translated subtitles are not captions. In many cases both should be present, and they serve different purposes and have different content so they should be separate tracks.

That's possible - firmware in SSDs is already doing most of the work that would be needed. I could see it being useful for LVM snapshots. But it wouldn't really solve the issue for filesystems, which would need to track versions separately for many separate small writes, leading to fragmented reads.

Huh, "SUPer" is super difficult to search for. Pretty neat looking tool tho, and there's a toolchain to get ASS into it. Looks like stuff like sign replacement with gradient backgrounds and motion tracking are tricky, but most CR scripts would likely work fine as-is.

I remember seeing some anime DVDs which used the angle feature to encode both en and JP credit versions of the op/ed. Neat idea, but it really suffered from both versions needing to split the limited dvd bitrate. BD seamless branching does seem better, tho I bet difficult to author.

btrfs is pretty cool, and I use it a lot, but both btrfs - and other filesystems or storage with differential snapshotting - have a performance hit that really hurts databases. On updates, small chunks of data need to be moved, causing fragmentation plus metadata overhead from tracking each piece.

I always cheer a little bit for shows on CR where the subtitler has a credit (usually in the subtitles during the end credits or next ep preview of the show). Means the TL cared about the work they did, and we get to see that it wasn't done by a faceless machine.

Arguably you should be paying for free software... But it's important to make sure your money is actually going to the people who make the free software.

As I've been saying: real money to random reward pipelines should always be classified as gambling. Doesn't matter if we're talking digital or physical, it should be considered gambling and heavily regulated accordingly. Can't sell for anyone under 18, can't be advertised in most places, etc.

The numbers are kind of interesting. On July 14, they're forecasting that the big solar farms will produce ~380MWh from 1pm-2pm, while in the same hour embedded solar will produce ~822MWh - more than twice as much energy.

In the demand section, they show forecasted generation from embedded solar and wind.

Something interesting I found on ieso.ca/power-data (in the data directory) is that they track grid-scale solar generation plants separately from "embedded" solar. Forecasted generation from "embedded" solar counts as a reduction in predicted demand for energy.

The PDF reader in Firefox being written in Javascript/HTML and sandboxed using all the same mechanisms as they use for web content, is a rather big improvement over the old browser plugin situation of "load an external dll into browser memory and let it do whatever it wants"

Its standard for forum software to allow admins to edit posts. Up to them to decide when it's appropriate to do so. You're posting in someone's privately owned space under the condition that you follow their rules.

I say that because I saw a revocation update show up on my Linux system (fwupd) today, and that update is distributed/signed by Microsoft and usually sent out pretty close in sync between fwupd.org and Windows Update.

Is there even anyone at Microsoft who remembers how that device works…

If I had to guess, probably a UEFI key revocation update got pushed via Windows Update which revoked a key used by some firmware or bootloader component on the system.

To an external observer, light actually *speeds up* as it moves further away from the sun. When near the sun (or something heavy), the curvature of spacetime makes it look to you like light takes longer to travel a given distance even tho its speed is constant from its own perspective.

Its super weird. Think about, say, a spinning amusement park ride that makes you move around in a circle - you can feel a force that accelerates you as it changes your direction constantly. But someone in orbit is in freefall in gravity and doesn't feel any acceleration despite the turning path.
