Gosh, this is a GREAT thread.
To think that this whole time I've been buying books at full price, and my strategy was "I'll remember to list this as a business expense in tax season!"
Friend: I always forgot.

Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

I went down a rabbit hole trying to figure out why I remembered a turtle and it turns out they put a turtle in the 1981 film...I'm not sure when I even would have watched that! Apparently it gave me a Mandela effect

I got a lot of new free little crochet patterns online and made a babybel cheese as a test.
The next little cheeses I crochet will be gifts

Hearing more and more testimonies about how terribly my former publisher burned and harmed authors (and editors).
I can't wait to see every single author flourish with success beyond everything that press ever delivered or ever could.
That's the great and perfect ending to this story.

I genuinely can't believe how hard it is to find stock images now that are not AI generated. This seems to have happened overnight.
The stock image sites I used to rely on do not even provide labels to identify these images as AI.
Are we already past the point of no return?

My profile picture is from Meow Wolf, specifically Omega Mart. If you visit the US Southwest and need inspiration for storytelling in a new medium, I cannot recommend anything better. I was not prepared for the level of immersion, Sci-Fi, mystery & art.

I think a lot of the staff started with the hope of using it as a stepping stone to get their own work published. But it was a LOT more work than anyone expected. I think a lot of editors put in 30-40 hour weeks and did excellent work. Absolutely zero excuses for not paying them.

The original model was for editors to volunteer on a short term basis. When I became involved in editing (2021-2023) I pushed for a new contract model for 3-6% staff commission until they could afford to pay upfront. MM had ~3 years to catch up and start paying editors, "staff", and authors.

I think one of the worst parts about how authors were duped by this press was that the outward messaging by the MM owner was the exact opposite of what she was actually doing.
Refusing to pay while touting a "socialist business model" of 45% royalties is excessively deceitful.

She might hate you or speak ill of you for a while, but someone else will call out her behavior or hold her accountable and they'll be the new enemy. There's a long line of people before us.
The blame shifting is strong. But hold your head high knowing you did the right thing - the hardest thing!

I've been off social media as an author for about 2 years. In my excitement to return, I accidentally created a second bsky account (whoops).
I'll figure this out eventually...but this is the account I'll be using to interact with the writing community, now!

and I am really glad that you and the other authors left together in solidarity, so you aren't being individually attacked. It's hard enough to be an author without being preyed upon. You are brave for speaking out and helping to warn others! That's the best thing we can do with this.

I'm so sorry that you were one of the many authors burned. To be honest, it would have been hard to reach me (haha), the fallout I went through with them was so bad I went off social media except for my personal accounts. I finally feel now like I'm ready to come back into the writing community...
