The worst thing about EHCP denial is the 'golden ticket' trope. The notion that an EHCP gets your child top-of-the-line, gold-plated, elite schooling.

It doesn't.

It gets your child support to get a good-enough education. Without those supports, SEN ed. is nowhere *near 'good enough' โ€” it's dire.

Yes - the report also contains the term โ€œgolden ticketโ€ to describe getting an EHCP which, having spent my sonโ€™s life fighting for every substandard scrap of support, is a particularly cynical - and hateful - way of putting it.

Some critics, including the Tory leader, Kemi Badenoch, suggest much of this demand is confected: pushy parents seeking a โ€œgolden ticketโ€ EHCP to gain advantages for their children, facilitated by an unthinking bureaucracy. A variant of this โ€œculture warโ€ view holds most children with EHCPs โ€œdonโ€™t reallyโ€ need support, but are simply โ€œbadly behavedโ€ and requiring proper parenting and discipline.

The consensus, however, is that the rising level of diagnosed need is genuine (and common to all wealthy countries). There is greater scientific understanding of autism, and a pile of evidence indicating a clear impact of pandemic lockdown isolation on levels of anxiety and mental illness in young people.

Nobody is denies the current SEND system is under pressure, under resourced and under invested. The idea EHCPs, or diagnosis, are a "golden ticket" is as offensive as it is ignorant though. The fight which many people have to access either shows that. #r4today

The article describes EHCPโ€™s as a โ€œgolden ticketโ€ which must be news to anyone who actually has an EHCP

Angela Rayner using the EHCP is a โ€œgolden ticketโ€ is an offensive and disrespectful trope. She should apologise, but wonโ€™t.
