Mellon Foundation The Mellon Foundation makes grants to actively unlock the power in the arts and humanities that helps connect us all.

β€œAmerican Academy of Arts&Sciences reports 96.3% of humanities grads age 23-32 fully employed. Earnings in humanitiess comparable to social/life sciences, job satisfaction levels too. A serious mismatch bw actual employment for hum grads +general perception."

For women, the increase of AI use in the workplace may affect their careers: Harvard study Women are using AI significantly less then men and it’s going to have a major impact on their careers, according to extensive research on the topic.

Every. Single. Story. about women not using AI as much as men portray it as bad for their future career prospects (without a shred of evidence) and a result of women being fearful little ladies rather than looking at AI's output and saying "this sucks, it's not going to help me."

As a former reviewer, I don’t agree w/ Brody that any review is β€œthe most inherently progressive mode of arts writing. When writing reviews, critics are in the position of the public”—at least the way he writes. Reviewers like teachers can meet the audience where they are, not where they should be.

The Humanities Really Do Produce a Profit – The Humanities Institute

β€œUniv. of Illinois report shows that a large humanities department like English produces substantial net profit; units like engineering and agriculture run at a loss. The widely respected Delaware Study of Instructional Costs and Productivity shows the same pattern.” /7 thi.ucsc.edu/the-humaniti...

So, if humanities produce good job outcomes, humanities have a secure ROI that bring in more than they cost, and STEM now has an even lower ROI due to grant cuts…. shouldn’t we invest more in humanities where less $$ goes a longer way? Apparently not. We should ask why not. /9

And what happened? Congress? Senate? How did it go? And of course being inarticulate is not a barrier as we see in current office holder. But having entire mass media establishment propping one up or discarding one matters. Anyway it’s over. People need to look forward not back.

I’m not a Biden dead ender and supported Kamala in many ways (time, money, etc) but was pretty sure that this country would go for an old white guy v old white guy. There’s really no other nuance to it. Nothing in presidential politics suggested that the country was over misogyny and misogynoir.

This is crazy because 1) I can barely get IRB approval for a survey about tech use and this somehow happened and 2) it’s actually often clear to people who work with kids when kids have experienced trauma without subjecting them to invasive human or AI guesswork; their behaviors tell the story.

Theee ripe figs on a plate

Theee ripe figs on a plate

Fig tree first crop of the year (breba crop). Planted by our home’s former owner, Angelo, circa 1967; tree went dormant one cold winter and then regenerated in a new spot in our tiny yard and now produces so many figs that we need to give them away/make jam late summer.

Jersey City Approves Development with Community Center at Duncan Hardware Site | Jersey Digs The owners behind the long-running business will be partnering to build a mixed-use project that will eventually house their business and create a new community recreation center.

It’s good Duncan Hardware is staying and seems to care about neighborhood. So why no affordable housing? Most in this neighborhood support it. I get the standard answer: developers want to make money. But both profit and affordability are possible. jerseydigs.com/duncan-hardw...

Could also do a bike sidewalkβ€”where the sidewalk is split half ped/half bike on JFK. Seems to be enough room and is how people already use it. Many German cities have this, and Coles Street lane does this now to Hoboken.

Interesting, thanks. So to the left going northeast is housing, some subsidized, some not. To the right (or east of extension) is Ferris itself.

NJ and Jersey City transit and/or ed people: Does anyone know what the proponents of the turnpike extension have said about what they will do with Ferris HS and Gateway Field, which are directly in way of expansion? PS5 and its nearby park will also be impacted.

In addition to universal wearables being ripped from dystopian fiction (from Gary Shteyngart’s Super Sad True Love Story, eg), these are also the worst for anxious people. I use a garmin and ignore its advice to my benefit. I’d like to see any research that shows these help people in the aggregate.

Not really tricks but just shoving work into corners of time; don’t see people much outside of family and colleagues, write weekend mornings, don’t take teaching work home (actually use the rubrics). I actually like having theory with practice, and the instant stream of data from your own work.

The long-term increases to ICE funding are a red flag.

Clearly, Trump & Co don’t plan to stop once they’ve deported current undocumented immigrants and β€œsecured the border.”

We should all be asking how Trump is planning to broaden the ICE scope of authority. The answers won’t be pretty. 1/

I love my neighborhood but it's not pleasant for just going on a walk. I have to go a few blocks to get to the calm part so often just don't (or only run or bike). I'm curious about neighborhoods where people go on the same walk every day, maybe evening or morning, with or w/o a dog. Where is this?

β€œPractically speaking, the opponents to a reform in Mass. are not a 100,000 politicians at the South, but a 100,000 merchants and farmers here, who are more interested in commerce & agriculture than they are in humanity, and are not prepared to do justice to the slave & to Mexico”: Thoreau holds up
