Will no one think of the leopards? This can’t be good for them.

Oops. Last one was going to be 8.

Now is the time to figure out a plan. There are resources online to see your local risk. Use them. Then stop worrying.

Here’s a site for hazards in Oregon. 9/

Also (I can’t believe I need to say this), don’t drive around like a crazy person and cause accidents. Your kids school has a plan, which will be easier to carry out without freaked out parents getting in the way. Just keep calm. There is almost certainly not going to be a tsunami. 7

Here’s what you don’t do. If you’re in a safe place, don’t get in your car and try to leave town. That’s a dick move. Not only are you blocking traffic for people who DO need to move, you’re often driving into a dangerous zone. In a car. You do not want to be in a car in a tsunami. 7

So any particular event is unlikely, but it COULD happen. And the weather service wants every warning taken seriously. So what do people do? Check local maps. Find out if your home/work/school is safe. If it isn’t, figure out the best route to quickly move to a safe place. That’s it. 6

And that’s the thing. Geology doesn’t happen on a human scale. That thing about being due? Yeah. Could be now, could be in 300 years. Geologically speaking that’s what due means, when you’re normally speaking in time frames measured in increments of 1000 years. 5

So here’s the deal. Most undersea earthquakes do not produce tsunamis. They are rare. The last really huge one to hit Oregon was in 1700. That said, geologic records show them happening roughly every 500 years, which means we are due. Geologically speaking, that is. 4

A lifetime of living on the Pacific coast and never having one pan out to more than a ripple has made me less frightened, possibly than I should be. But also that dusty geology degree in my closet made me take precautions, like checking the tsunami and flood maps when I bought my house. 3

Today I had to talk down my dental hygienist, who spent most of yesterday crying. I honestly didn’t realize until now that most people thought the tsunami warning meant: a tsunami has been spotted heading this way. I guess that I should have. My bad. 2

So yesterday those of us on the west coast from mid Oregon to central CA had a little national weather service kerfuffle. I.e. a tsunami warning. And it appears that a whole bunch of people freaked tf out. And that’s why people on the coast apparently need to learn about tsunamis. 1🧵

My mother is named Andrea, and goes by Andy. My stepdad was named Mark Kaufman. My mom came very close to not changing her name to Andy Kaufman. So it could be worse is what I am saying.

Did anyone else today get followed by an “Elon R Musk” and quickly block?

Probably not THAT one, but anyone who would think it’s fun to pretend to be is worth blocking on principle.

Females have to take care of kittens. Genetically they have to think on their paws.

Just looked at the Reddit comments. The number of men trying to claim that they don’t understand the red flags here was exhausting.

Dangerous Beans aka Beanie, Sweet Baby Beans, Beentzy Boy. He’s my baby, and the least traitorous of the bunch. SO FAR! Only a year old and 16 lbs he aspires to be a Maine Coon just like Crow. His name also comes from a book by Sir Pterry.

Sugar Magnolia aka Maggie. The lady of the house, and the smartest of the bunch. Very food motivated, this girl will do anything for cheese. Solved a cat puzzle toy first try in minutes. She’s currently training me to share my dinner if she sits when I tell her to.

This is Edgar Winter aka Eggr, Egg, Eggy, Bark Boy, Butthead. He showed up in our yard after we moved in. Used to semi-belong to the neighbor as an outdoor only cat, but we all bowed to Edgar’s wishes, and he lives here now. Neutered, vaxxed and named now (they just called him Whitey) he’s ours.

Since most of my content involves cats, let’s introduce the players around here.

This is Crowley. 23 lbs of nervous self effacing sweetness. The lord of the manor generally looks concerned that something, somewhere is out of place. Also known as Crow and Crowbunny, his name comes from Good Omens.

Yeah… yeah, let’s go with that!

Actually, I think they know that I don’t hold still when they lie on top of me. Plus the hot flashes are bad enough without 15 lb furnaces pinning me down.

Aw. Lulu had a black nose. May her memory be a blessing!

Our Edgar Winter has pink lemonade accoutrements. He just showed up in our yard shortly after we moved here and weaseled his way into the house.

The other side of the same bed, utterly devoid of cats. A catless expanse of catfree duvet. No cats.

His side of the bed… vs. my side of the bed. 😢

Traitors. Traitors, every one of them.

I have been screaming this for years: women’s rooms have stalls, and no one sees anything except people washing their hands. Nothing. It’s so goddamn stupid.

I was in high school during the rise of the Moral Majority, which was neither. For decades they have tried to claim morality for themselves. Don’t let them.
