I have written and deleted a lot of posts but I keep thinking about how the brutal assassination of Minnesota State senator Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their beloved dog Gilbert in June did not prompt this same level of calls for empathy, sympathy, and flags at half-mast.

What a beautiful piece. And this is what I always emphasize to my own students, and in fact said (in other words) today: “One cannot choose the time one is born into, but one can choose what to do with the time one has.”

As a historian I can say that it all has value—leaving a record, bearing witness, and also seizing what joy we can amid direst circumstances (Stephanie Camp has a great book about how important rival geographies of power and claiming joy were for enslaved people).
