Sometimes (often) I think that rather than the annual ridiculous and performative hashtag autism awareness, we would be better off with education around ~Ableism Awareness~ instead.

Ableism seems to be the last acceptable bigotry.

It is rarely even recognised, and gets pushback even less often.

Tuff Turf (1985) What was that??? I’ve honestly no idea. It was tonally all over the place & didn’t seem to know what genre it was. It was like a failed mash-up of Rebel Without A Cause, Grease, The Outsiders, West Side Story, and a whole bunch of John Hughes movies

Not to mention, on the lead up to a very unsexy sex scene Spader utters the words: “I don’t think you can hold onto anything until you let it go.” (I honestly don’t know how he could deliver that with a straight face).

The dialogue is painful incl the speech Spader’s dad gives him (like a Chat GPT & inspo quote mash-up) all while ignoring his son needs to go to hospital after being severely beaten: “Life isn’t a problem to be solved, it’s a mystery to be lived. So live it.” Yeah, cheers, dad (cue kidney rupture).

Then Spader gets on the piano and starts lip sync serenading his girlfriend and I just lost it (something about walking the night, hearing her eyes, and touching her smile…?) He does it with such earnestness I have to applaud.

“Of course, the finger sandwiches, you know you can never go wrong with them; I figure if I’m having a party, a small 25, 30 people, you get the watercress, slice the purple onion very thin, touch of butter, cut the crusts off the bread, you know, you’ve got it made.”

The invasion of the country club was genuinely amusing at times, mainly thanks to Robert Downey and Olivia Barash – honestly, she was a delight who lit up every scene she was in. Though, Spader cornering a couple with his quality food chat was a gem too:

It was confused. And confusing. It inexplicably seemed to think it was a musical at times and there was even (excruciating) choreographed dancing all while, bizarrely, Jim Carroll’s band played (with Robert Downey (sans the ‘jr’) on drums, looking fabulously queer).

There were some tongue moments but I’m hesitant to class them as lizard tongue moments as it was more lip licking (is this what autistic monotropic interests & pattern-spotting has led me to??? Analysing Spader’s tongue acting? Will I be the in-demand expert? The pay is better than writing, right?)

It then spirals dramatically from there. I loved the newly slickbacked hair to signal Spader’s bad boy shift and the bouncing bunny scene was a weird delight. There was so much potential for homoeroticism, but the film sadly didn’t lean into it at all
