You feel so lost, so cut off, so alone, only you're not. See, in all our searching, the only thing we've found that makes the emptiness bearable, is each other.

In case you needed someone to tell you this:
You can do it.
You know what to do.
You are so smart.
You are doing your best.
I see how hard you're trying.
Keep going.
I am so proud of you.
Figure skating world championships were considered to be for men only until 1902, when Madge Syers showed up and took home silver and the ISU went "whooooops guess we need to segregate them."
It happened again in 1992 Olympic skeet shooting: Zhang Shan took gold and then they segregated the event.
WaPo using the word โrepairโ here certainly makes it sound valorous, doesnโt it.

HOW CRAZY IS IT THAT WE CAN SEE THAT?
I've just been staring at this. Each one of those galaxies has billions of stars, and this photo is just a tiny piece of the night sky. Our brains simply cannot comprehend how big it all is, and how small we all are. ๐คฏ
11.12.2024 01:22 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I'd guess most of my Asian American friends are comfortable with both depending on the context. At an AAPI film festival there's a strong feeling of solidarity. At a bar, we might lean into the differences between ethnicities, and toss barbed comments jokingly based on stereotypes at each other.

Donโt know if itโs the swirling doomsday vibes or a need for novelty or both but I dug this ancient, analog, and completely offline Olympus point and shoot camera out of a drawer and actually bought film for it. Now to see if it still works.
07.12.2024 18:02 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Title: "Participatory Disinformation The โBig Lieโ during the 2020 Election and the January 6, 2021 Attack on the U.S. Capitol" This is a visual graphic explaining the dynamics between โpolitical elitesโ and โaudiencesโ in this phenomenon. Political elites are at the top of the graph, audiences at the bottom, with several arcing arrows from elites to audiences on the right, and from audiences to elites on the left, in a kind of clockwise motion, showing a cyclical process. The arcing arrows have labels, explained below. Political elites repeatedly spread the message of a rigged election, which set an expectation of voter fraud among their audiences. This became a โframeโ through which events around the election were interpreted. Online โcrowdsโ generated false/misleading stories of voter fraud, reinforcing the frame. Sometimes these stories were produced intentionally (with knowledge that they were false). But often they were generated sincerely, through misinterpretation. Activists and social media influencers helped amplify these stories, passing the content up to the political elites. Political elites echoed the false/misleading stories back to their audiences, reinforcing the frame, building a sense of collective grievance. As audiences echoed and reiterated this growing sense of grievance, violent language and calls to action increased. Political elites then began to mobilize and organize the audiencesโฆ into a series of rallies and protests. And one of these led to the violent attack on the Capitol on January 6.
Here's a graphic explaining how the Big Lie was seeded and mobilized into the events of January 6, 2021 through a kind of "participatory disinformation" process. Trump's "war on drugs" refrain could catalyze a similar kind of participatory propaganda and mobilization cycle.

Photo of CD sleeve for Kim Dealโs new album, with disc. Album cover is an illustration in a painterly style showing Kim standing on a circular floating platform in the ocean with her Stratocaster, her amps, and a flamingo.
Yesterday I walked into a little record store and asked the guy at the counter if he had the new Kim Deal record. He smiled, handed me a copy, and we briefly discussed the artwork and how it differs from the classic 4AD aesthetic. Itโs literally been years since Iโve had an interaction like that.
