Traditional American politics is premised on the notion that sometimes you lose and sometimes you win and you have to deal with that.

But Trumpism is premised on the notion that any result where you don’t win is illegitimate, unlawful, fraud, criminal.

You can’t negotiate with people like that.

I suspect the nailbiter of the night will be CA Prop 50.

Have you read anything by Frances Hardinge? She is endlessly inventive. I especially recommend A Face Like Glass, Cuckoo Song, and The Lie Tree.

It's only an ethics violation if Congress, which he controls, makes it one.

Has any other justice so repeatedly, publicly, demonstrated such emotional instability?

If you've watched the cam for Fat Bear week, you will see that Grizzly Bears do the same thing. The best fishers, especially, will only eat the brain and other organs of the salmon, leaving the scraps for the gulls and hungrier bears.

I would argue that misunderstandings are realistic, but that the trope is often deployed in unrealistic ways.

Yes, since the reader is (usually) in the position of the all-knowing observer, the author has to work hard to make the misunderstanding believable. Too often, it seems like the characters are inexplicably choosing not to ask the obvious question.

What if you're a California voter living in Washington? Asking on behalf of my college student son who still hadn't mailed out his ballot as of last night.... I suppose the best idea would be to take it to the post office and see it being stamped.

PS apparently it's Katharine Hepburn and Kathryn Janeway. Who knew there were so many ways to spell the name, even without getting into the Cs.

03.11.2025 16:57 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Oh, I think Mulgrew's evocation of Hepburn is quite deliberate! I believe she was the one who suggested changing the captain's name to Katherine.

It's amazing how thoroughly Leonard Nimoy set the template for how Vulcans are portrayed. The vocal cadences, the deliberate stillness, the swallowed sighs of frustration.

We finally got around to watching it; just began the second season. It certainly has the best theme music and opening credits of any trek. Casting Katherine Hepburn as Janeway was a masterstroke. So far my favorite moments are Tuvok "I've been married for 67 years" and "get that cheese to sickbay!"

One cat is sitting on my spouse's lap. She ignored the sound at first, then slowly turned her head and glared: "how dare you disturb me?"

02.11.2025 20:03 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Why should she jump onto my lap when she can make me follow her into the bedroom and pet her as per her orders?

02.11.2025 20:00 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

With one of our cats, location is key. She sits at the entrance to the living room, yelling. Once she has your attention, she will lead you down the hall into the bedroom, reinforcing her orders as necessary. Then she will jump on the bed. Because she wants to be petted ON THE BED and nowhere else.

I bought something about a month ago on Etsy without realizing until after it had shipped that the seller was in Turkey. For some reason I lucked out and it arrived with no surcharges.
