You can either have beautiful or β€œpop” but not both. That is how AI works.

Home injection molding. It’s the obvious next step.

Low key I really want to do this…

I think it is more that they are trying to create differentiation around something that most people don't see as differentiated. Who knew late stage capitalism would lead to advertising on our freaking light switches?

Probably a similar thing but I don’t know enough to say. I wonder how strong the firewalls are for each.

One interesting aspect, I think I remember that not all services are available in govcloud. I wonder how that’ll apply to the eu cloud.

Accounts/org api and IAM are also global. Wonder if it is a whole different endpoint and instances for those too? I imagine so.

My assumption is it went from a β€œnice to have” to a must have and that safe harbor for us firms operating in Europe will break down.

This is fascinating. People don’t trust the US anymore. And Amazon is adapting. Opens up room for more fragmentation in the cloud market.

Probably creates opportunity too. Could we see the US dominance in cloud wane over time?

The Mothership Vortex: An Investigation Into the Firm at the Heart of the Democratic Spam Machine How a single consulting firm extracted $282 million from a network of spam PACs while delivering just $11 million to actual campaigns.

The annoying spam texts destroying the Democratic brand:

$678M raised through those spam tactics

$282M to one consulting firm: Mothership Strategies.

$11M to actual campaigns (1.6%)

The party isn’t just treating donors like marksβ€”it’s being fleeced itself yet continues to back Mothership.

Container Native Package System Β· 80%

I love Nix for what it is trying to do. Unfortunately so much software isn’t built to be used in that world.

Fun fact β€” I used Nix as inspiration for some rethinking of container images that never went anywhere over 10 years ago. Makes me feel old. www.eightypercent.net/post/new-con...

Also, the APIs are just β€œplain old data” and the preferred way to get them to the server is JSON. At this point (I believe) all YAML processing is done client side. I may be out of date though.

30.07.2025 20:55 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It is obviously more controversial than it first appeared to me! Thanks for the context.

30.07.2025 20:54 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Well, any yaml parser can read it so it can be used by a ton of tools out there.

The current plan is for it to only be an output format. Something that is easier to work with. So it isn’t clear there is much need for others to produce it unless they want to.

30.07.2025 20:53 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

And we are quick to tell everyone that k8s isn’t right for everyone! There are a zillion ways to run stuff in production. Hopefully k8s made some good tradeoffs but it isn’t right for everyone.

The danger with adopting a config language is that it makes it even harder to get started!

30.07.2025 20:52 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Nix is a lot like Cue (as referenced from the other discussion) in that it is amazing and almost impossible for the uninitiated to use. IMO it’ll never see wide adoption outside of dedicated first adopters because the complexity hill is so steep.

30.07.2025 20:44 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

And this solution invented as little new as possible. It is literally YAML. Just a subset that looks very JSON like with some human affordances.

30.07.2025 20:42 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

2. IMO those solutions operate at a different level. For tools like kubectl there is a need for something to encode Plain Old Data. That was why YAML/JSON was picked in the first place.

It feels right to layer a more complex system like cue on top of a Plain Old Data data model.

30.07.2025 20:41 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Some considerations:
1. I love cue. And there are other interesting solutions. But these haven’t seen universal adoption. IMO config languages are a problem (like programming languages and make systems) where there is no universal solution. Too many tradeoffs.

30.07.2025 20:41 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

How do you get this restricted yaml format out of kubectl without giving the variant a name?

30.07.2025 20:36 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

You need something to specify to request that format when calling kubectl. That is my understanding.
