I'd argue that within right wing circles this was already a popular threat to get seniors and new grads to comply with what the organization supports. My right wing college (PCC) openly stated they could withhold degrees of graduating seniors (even if the degree was completed academicly).

For a Christian college they certainly lacked mercy. And I can say personally that the "no excuses" mentality really caused some extreme anxiety in my life during those years.

It's probably because most of us get yelled at any time we speak up. I can tell you exactly how my conservative homeschool community reacted when I criticized them. And they definitely don't want to hear any options that contradict their beliefs. Even my own family refuses to acknowledge the harm.
