As a result food companies imported chickens instead from low welfare countries such as Romania.

So the result of parliament voting to improve welfare had the exact opposite effect thanks to insane planning regulations which prevented farmers from complying with law!

Planning is ridiculous. I was talking to a senior manager in food stuff last week. In 2006 parliament passed legislation to improve the housing of chickens. This required new coops to be built.

None got built as LAs rejected the planning.
