Destabilization of reality in the US is about to reach surreal heights. Protect your mind. Monitor stress levels. Do not doomscroll--it does not help. Be selective about when and how long you expose your brain to this. Do what you can when you can.

If you stopped at a deserted rest area to use the restroom and found it filled with turtles who all silently, balefully, turned their heads to look at you, how many turtles would it take to scare you off? That number is your Uncanny Rest-Area Restroom Turtle Number.

I just felt a tiny ant crawling on my hand and impulsively blew it onto the carpet instead of killing it, and now I’m sad as I imagine it wandering aimlessly through an endless forest of identical blue trees, slowly losing its mind.

The number one advice any & every writing professional can & will give you is this:

DO NOT BE AFRAID TO SUCK.

You have spent years reading books, watching movies & TV, developing taste to know good from bad. NO ONE GETS TO READ YOUR WRITING UNTIL YOU LET THEM. Trust your taste & write fearlessly.

Column | 7 works to understand the mind-bending world of Hideo Kojima The creator of “Death Stranding” has blockbuster projects lined up across Hollywood. These are the works that made him one of gaming’s most famous figures.

i no longer believe Death Stranding was a Hideo Kojima “prediction.” It was “protection.”

Despite using social media interfaces with “likes,” the game is built as an anti-conflict algorithm where people are FORCED to support each other. He wanted to help.

Names for pedants in different countries

5. Comma fucker (Finland)
4. Little dot shitter (Switzerland)
3. Whittler of woodchips (Norway)

I’m afraid I must now share my three favourite jokes about pedants . . .

How many pedants does it take to change a lightbulb?
The correct term is ‘replace’

Where did medieval pedants get their water?
From a well, actually

I waited years for the love of my life to get out of prison, so we could get engaged. When she was finally being released I explained my plan to my dad, who was an English teacher, even showed him the ring. ‘No, son,’ he said, tutting. ‘You can’t end a sentence with a proposition’
In the Swiss German Tüpflischiisser, the Tüpfli could refer to the little dots that appear over letters. So it could also be translated as ‘tittle shitter.’

And I should add that little dots and other accents that go above (or below) letters are called diacritics (not including that important information in a book about language would have been a dire/critical mistake)

2. Counter of peas (Germany)
1. Sodomiser of flies (France)

Another couple of German words for sticklers are Korinthenkacker (‘currant crapper’) and Paragraphenreiter, which means ‘paragraph rider’ (though I prefer to translate it as either ‘paragraph equestrian’ or ‘member of the paragraph cavalry’).
Two words for a know-it-all are Besserwisser (‘better-knower’) and Klugscheißer (‘smart-shitter’).

And if someone is arguing in a very pedantic way, especially if about something unimportant, you could use the expression das ist ein Streit um des Kaisers Bart, ‘this is a quarrel over the Emperor’s beard’

Some similar words for a pedant from Dutch are muggenzifter (‘mosquito-sifter’) and mierenneuker (‘ant-fucker’).

An insect-related word for a pedant in English is ‘nitpicker’ (or should that be ‘nit-picker’?) but easily my favourite English term for a habitual fault-finder is an 18th-century word (from a Laurence Sterne novel), smelfungus

I should probably add that my latest book, THE WHEEL IS SPINNING BUT THE HAMSTER IS DEAD: A JOURNEY AROUND THE WORLD IN IDIOMS, PROVERBS AND GENERAL NONSENSE (link in my bio), is a pedant’s dream (and not just because of the many errors in it!)

Many commentators say that vigilante groups are never the answer. But they clearly don't know about the masked Ecuadorian trio named “Acción Ortográfica Quito,” who roam the streets at night with a singular purpose: to correct all the spelling and grammar mistakes they find in graffiti.

Proxy is a Julia Roberts + red lighting fan, I guess? She ignored the entire movie but sat down to watch this part attentively. (Now watching: FLATLINERS)
