I too stood in line at school for the polio vaccination. Years later at a VA facility close to the medical school I was working at, I found a large room in a building full of no longer needed iron lung machines. Thank you Dr. Salk. No thank you RFK Jr.

No doubt the tavern closed in 1920 when Prohibition kicked in and sometime later it became Wally's corner store.

It may have been a tavern originally, but we lived on the 24th and St. Louis block in the 50s and it was Wally's corner food store. He had a dog named Rusty that we used to play with when we stopped in. Kitty corner was a shoe maker, with the smell of leather as you walked by.

OHC 2014 - Oct 18 &19
Volunteer weekend
Spent two days there back in 2014 during Open House Chicago. Here's my Flickr album of it and check out what was on the floor beneath - just as fascinating.
They gave me a model of the Water Tower as a thank you, which I treasure.

I talk about this building during a walking tour of the area for the Chicago History Museum. Fun tid-bit: it was dedicated on or near the day of the stock market crash in 1929.
