Bill C-5 revealing itself as a Trojan horse designed to appease Alberta's fossil fuel interests If Bill C-5 is to have any credibility in a climate-constrained world, it must confront the deeper issue: Alberta’s entrenched dependence on oil royalties.

I am unconvinced that caving to partisan sniping is a solid basis for sound policy decisions.

If the PM were invited to a meeting with Trump and was told he'd be on the receiving end of information for 3/4 of a day and could then ask a question and that's it for the day, think he'd go? So why does he think that's what "nation to nation" looks like with Indigenous peoples?

Ottawa sets agenda for meeting on One Canadian Economy Law Ottawa is telling First Nations chiefs to submit their questions in advance of next week's meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney.

There is a profound ick factor to Ottawa "setting the agenda" for a meeting with First Nations chiefs that is only surpassed by the irony that the meeting is supposed to be about meaningful consultation. #BillC-5 #cdnpoli www.aptnnews.ca/national-new...

Snubs and scrambles ahead of Carney's major projects meeting with First Nations Many First Nations leaders see the haste with which the July 17 meeting regarding Bill C-5 was assembled as a reflection of the flaws in the bill itself.

Bill C-5 is not just bad policy, it’s a constitutional mess Under Prime Minister Mark Carney's plan to speed up development in the country's "national interest", projects will get the green light before they are reviewed.

Yes and: Cabinet can still choose not to exercise those sweeping #BillC-5 powers. It can choose to comply with environmental laws. It can choose to ask the public what "national interest" means. It can choose good projects, not pipelines. #cdnpoli www.nationalobserver.com/2025/07/02/o...

2/2 Props to Senators Prosper, Woo, McPhedran and McCallum for their attempts to improve #BillC-5. It's a terrible law and a dangerous precedent, but the Senate helped put the government on notice that its implementation will be closely scrutinized. #cdnpoli

1/2 Well, #BillC-5 just passed in the #SenateofCanada without amendments, but with a government commitment to amend it in the fall to ensure the public registry includes info about how projects will contribute to clean growth and to meeting Canada's climate objectives.

I share his dubiousness. If the federal government intends to implement #BillC-5 in a manner that respects and upholds Indigenous rights and protects the environment, why would it not include those requirements in the Bill? Especially when it has heard the considerable concerns about it. #cdnpoli

Lots went badly there. Sure, the @mark-carney.bsky.social government took advantage of a Senate that is keenly aware of its unelected status. On the other hand, shouldn’t the chamber of sober second thought live up to its job? #BillC-5 isn’t a panacea. A few months’ study wouldn’t break Canada.

It’s interesting that there aren’t more alarm bells about the fact that the bill does an end-run around fundamental democratic principles. #BillC-5 would let Cabinet unilaterally declare laws inoperable, with no Parliamentary oversight. Has anyone checked whether Canadians voted for that? #cdnpoli

2/2 If time is money, the @mark-carney.bsky.social government is going to get what it paid for by rushing this #BillC-5 through. It'd be great if the #SenateofCanada did its job as the chamber of sober second thought, split the bill and did a proper study of Part 2. #cdnpoli

1/2 The good news is the House amended #BillC-5, mostly to increase transparency, which will help provide accountability. The bad news is they don't address the constitutional issues and introduce inconsistencies that could create more headaches and inefficiencies down the road. #cdnpoli #BillC5

What’s going on with federal climate policy? C-5 has taken up a lot of oxygen so it’s fair to wonder. Also fair to fret. We do have a law to reduce risk of backslipping. Is it up to the task? Can we have no fear, or at least less fear, because CNZEAA is still here?

Indigenous leaders were present in the Senate on Monday to give testimony about Bill C-5, legislation that Prime Minister Mark Carney is pushing to have passed by July 1.

Several senators asked those leaders their opinion about the speed of the process.

This isn't even the thin edge of the wedge. #BillC5 builds on what began with the Harper government's sweeping rollbacks of our environmental laws in 2012, safeguards that were never fully restored. What next - privatizing environmental decisions? Or just busting out the rubber stamp?
