South City. Formerly biogeochemistry/microbial bioinformatics; now software and bikes/urbanism/random plants.

03.02.2026 19:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There are ferries to Oyster Point and SamTrans finally extended the 130 to it. Genentech has dedicated buses to Glen Park BART too. The Bay Trail runs around it, but lacks good connections across 101; this is something advocates have been pushing for years though so hopefully soon.
03.02.2026 19:01 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Oyster Point is a large hill with the Wind Harp near the top, but Genentech has a good location on it too. Genentech has a TDM plan with trip caps so I imagine this redesign is partly to help limit people driving their car in just so they can take meetings in different parts of the campus.

Cheap HTs are not going to save us from a totalitarian state. You gotta not let that shit happen in the first place.

12.01.2026 21:16 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Why does my stdout not have the same number of genes as my written .csv file? Six hours later I figured out that the authors hard-coded to print a max of 7,693 genes to stdout, but all genes to the .csv file. These little unexplained details can kill a bioinformatician....

My collaborator Spencer Diamond is hiring a postdoc. You get to work with a lot of awesome microbiome data, including rumen microbiome data. Spencer's a great guy to work with and has taught me a lot.

None of this is really esoteric, but in 2025 I got into Warhammer, bought a 3D printer and made replacements for things, started (re)learning piano, and grew popcorn for the first time.

The map is wrong; there wasn't a spur. There was a trolley that connected to the SF-SM interurban line near where SSF's new library is (Leipsic Junction).
26.12.2025 21:18 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Was it legal to leave a horse carriage on the street unattended? I assume most early parking in cities was in converted carriage houses until the 40s or so when car ownership became more widespread.

New traffic code would shift limit from 1 hour max on the street between 3am and 5am to 2 hours max between 2am and 6am." A clipping of an old newspaper article titled "Night Parking Law Upheld" is attached.
SF had a ban into the 40's too.
