Once, I was an artist I carried folders of poems, and sketchbooks filled with amateurish drawings I painted, and even sold some I could have grown to be good, I think But it's hard to pay the rent with your creations You have to be willing to starve for it to bleed for it Creation became part time and then just on the weekends and then sometimes not at all I found my way in the business world Hell I was good at it Soulless work for a soulless man increasingly distant from the young artist who dreamed of stage and film and published works Gallery showings and esteemed New York City critics holding their chins thoughtfully "He has a unique view of the world, and an instantly recognizable style" Walter Mitty daydreams of fame while programming data formats in an air conditioned office with good benefits My hair is grey now The youthful naivete is gone The bills are paid The house is beautiful The car, popular and high performance I sit in a well appointed office fielding messages from "important" people offering princely sums for a pittance of my time But no matter how much I accumulate, it never seems to be enough to afford a 19 year old's folder of poems

Oh, one last thing before I go. I rarely post anything long form here, preferring to post directly into the box and pushing post. But this one is my story, so I'm going to share.
