Squeezed by Crowds, the Roads of Central Park Are Being Reimagined As more urban green spaces go car-free, how does the world’s most-visited city park deal with a growing crush of bike and pedestrian traffic?

Great article on managing Central Parks drives for pedestrians, runners, bikes and carriages. Thanks to @johnsurico.bsky.social for including JFK Promenade and Sunset Dunes for comparison.

@rollovereasy.bsky.social I’m curious what Chris thinks of the SF Bay Area Bench Collective’s recent installation of Duderstadt-inspired benches at Muni stops, and what he would think of a potential official permitting process for community members to install benches at Muni stops around the city.

San Francisco's Vision Zero effortsβ€”to eliminate roadway fatalities and severe injuriesβ€”have failed because the City hasn't focused on making it safer and faster to walk, bike, and take public transit, which would help people shift trips from cars to walking, biking, and transit.

Great question and point! Yes, there will be plastic soft-hit posts in the β€œbuffer” between the bikeway and driving lanes. Full design at www.sfmta.com/media/41021/....

There should be concrete separating the bikewayβ€”and protecting people on bikesβ€”but this is all the City was willing to do for now.

The recent car crashes that destroyed two businesses’ parklets highlight the negative impacts of cars on our city and the need for policy and infrastructure to help people shift trips from cars to bikes and public transit as well as physical infrastructure to protect parklets.
