Today the East Bay Regional Parks District held a groundbreaking for a new 2.5 mile stretch of the San Francisco Bay Trail, connecting the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge to Point Molate. 350 miles of the Bay Trail has been completed, with plans to have a total of 500 miles of trail encircling the Bay.

Happy birthday NASA, which was established on this day in 1958. Our district is home to Chabot Space and Science Center, including the NASA Ames Visitor Center. While best known for space exploration, NASA also provides vital data on our home planet, which has been vital to address climate change.

Congratulations to this year's cohort for completing their STEM programs at @berkeleylab.lbl.gov. These young minds will be at the forefront of advancing scientific research. Thanks to Dr. Faith Dukes, Director of K-12 STEM Education Programs, for making this possible.

July is UV Safety Month. Even on foggy days like this week, harmful UV rays can pass through, causing sunburns that could lead to more serious medical conditions. When working or enjoying the outdoors this summer, be sure to seek shade, protective clothing, and sunscreen.

I recently took a tour of Richmond's Brookside Shelter to learn about the work Contra Costa County is doing to lift people out of homelessness. The County saw a 26% drop in homelessness over the past year, a testament to increases in housing options and services.

I am saddened to hear of the loss of Parole Agent Joshua Lemont Byrd, who was gunned down in the line of duty yesterday. I am thankful to the work of Oakland Police for swiftly detaining the suspect. My heart goes out to his family and colleagues at CDCR.

Trump's tariffs are having harmful impacts on our supply chains, harming consumers like you. The Port of Oakland is experiencing a decline in shipping as a result. Today, the Senate took a stand against these tariffs. Californians and the American people deserve better.

Yesterday, healthcare workers at Highland Hospital rallied in opposition to federal cuts to Medicaid, which places 3.4M Californians at risk of losing Medi-Cal coverage. We must stand against these unjust cuts that will cause irreparable harm to our communities.

Last Friday, local Richmond businesses and vendors held a community event which helped fundraise for immigrant nonprofits. Inspiring to see communities coming together in support of one another while promoting the local economy.

Excited to tour one of Berkeley's newest affordable housing developments, the Maudelle Miller Shirek Community. 87 units of affordable housing, with preference to former Berkeley residents who have been displaced. Welcome home!

California's deployment of search and rescue teams to help Texas includes assistance from Oakland. California joins other states and countries in providing support to the people of Texas during this time of unimaginable destruction and heartbreak.

As we mark National Parks & Recreation Month, California has announced progress on its 30x30 plan - to conserve 30% of its land and coastal waters by 2030, conserving over 1M acres over the past year. Conservation efforts will improve access to nature while improving resiliency.

Today, the House chose to betray the American people. Millions of people will lose healthcare coverage and access to basic needs, all so the ultra-rich can gain unimaginable wealth at the expense of working-class Americans. The voters will remember this shameful day.

Tomorrow we celebrate the 249th anniversary of our independence, where we rejected the notion of tyrannical leaders. We stand for the freedom and liberty of all people, which includes our immigrant communities that are currently being targeted.

As Congress makes devastating cuts to health care, food assistance and essential services, California’s recently approved budget delivers for working families and for the East Bay. I am proud to announce that I helped secure $1.8 billion in funding for Bay Area and California priorities. • $750 million dollar loan to save Bay Area transit • Restoring $500 million for homelessness funding • Restoring $500 million for Low Income Housing Tax Credits • Restoring $120 million for the Multi-Family Housing Program In addition our adopted budget includes: • No cuts to UC, CSU or K-12 schools • New public safety investments, including wildfire protection and victim support • Funding for CalFresh • Additional support for immigration legal services This budget responsibly closes shortfalls, adds money to the reserves, and avoids deep cuts. While the federal government is prioritizing tax cuts for billionaires, Senate Democrats making California more affordable.

Today the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District held a Change of Command ceremony to celebrate the annexation of the Rodeo-Hercules Fire Protection District. This move will enhance fire and EMS services for residents of Hercules and Rodeo.

Congrats to Oakland's newest affordable housing development, the Margaret Gordon West Port. This will provide 58 units, including for those who were formerly unhoused. Thanks to Oakland's Measure U, Oakland is currently experiencing a boom in affordable housing construction.
