I’m an atheist but this was a masterclass in speaking truth to power and using your platform for good.

As a law enforcement family this just breaks my heart and just so damn angry. I can’t even imagine what they and their families must be feeling.

🤦🏼‍♀️ Gonna be a long 4 years.

I, admittedly, have been less optimistic as I now find that my name and my vote are on the list of voters the NC GOP are attempting to disenfranchise. I haven’t had the heart to tell my daughter that our great voting endeavor might yet be struck down by a sore loser.

Over the next few days, as election results rolled in, she experienced the complicated feelings that come with finding out elections went the way we wanted—or didn’t. She handled each outcome with a grace and optimism I find enviable in today’s world.

Fast forward a few weeks later, and on Election Day, I had a candid conversation with my daughter again—this time about how we don’t always win every election. We talked about the importance of being gracious winners and good losers, a concept she hears often in kindergarten.

We took a photo on our way out, and when we arrived home, she proudly told her law enforcement father that she had the chance to see Mom vote today.

She greeted each person she met with enthusiasm, regardless of political affiliation. She stood by me as I presented my North Carolina ID and confirmed my registration. Her pride swelled when the poll worker asked if she would like to help feed my ballot into the machine to be counted.

As we arrived at our polling location, I reminded her of the importance of being quiet and respectful in the voting space. We discussed how fortunate we are to live in a country where everyone has the right to vote and make their voices heard.

This was my daughter's first time accompanying me to vote, and to say she was excited would be an understatement. She carefully chose her red, white, and blue outfit, and we even added red, white, and blue ribbons to her hair.

On October 24th around 5 p.m., I had the joy of taking my excited kindergarten-aged daughter to our local library to participate in early voting. As a school teacher, this was the earliest I could get there after my workday. #countdontcancel #ncpol #nc

We need to encourage kids to find the path that’s right for them.

Messaging any one path as superior or the ticket to success fails very kid who falls somewhere else on the curve.
