Letter to the Guardian.
The protection of badgers has a long pedigree (Report, 29 August). Arthur Gore, known as "Boofy", the eighth Earl of Arran, was a fanatical defender of them. He was also a tireless campaigner for the rights of homosexuals. In 1967 he managed to push through a law in the Lords that decriminalised homosexuality but failed to pass a bill to outlaw the cruel hunting of badgers. When asked why he had not received enough support for his badger bill, he replied: "Not many badgers in the House of Lords." Tony Lywood Keswick, Cumbria

OU placed a graduate student instructor on leave after a student publicly contested a grade and filed an illegal discrimination claim after she received a failing grade on an essay that cited the Bible.

According to a statement released Sunday, the university wrote it is taking these concerns seriously and has begun a full review of the situation.

“The University of Oklahoma takes seriously concerns involving First Amendment rights, certainly including religious freedoms. Upon receiving notice from the student on the grading of an assignment, the University immediately began a full review of the situation and has acted swiftly to address the matter,” the statement read.

Opinion | How America Used Egypt to Justify Racism and Slavery Charles Vanthournout writes about how ancient Egypt shaped slavery and liberation in the American South.

OPINION: " There was a reason pro-slavery businessmen and thinkers were energized by the prospect of an American Egypt: Many Southern planters imagined themselves as guardians of a hierarchical and aristocratic system, one grounded in landownership, tradition and honor," Charles Vanthournout writes.

Will Border Wall Construction Deplete Desert Springs? Volunteers are monitoring natural springs in an Arizona wilderness to understand what the construction of a border wall will cost wildlife.

“We live in the desert and we really need these water sources for wildlife to survive,” says a conservation manager. A new section of border wall could deplete springs in a crucial wildlife corridor between Arizona and Mexico—and that’s just one concern about it.
