Update: The next session, we spent one hour catching up. When we started playing, I said, as prompted by Jason Morningstar, it's ten years later, god is dead, things are worse. And then paused the game and asked everyone if they wanted to play a new game.

We talked about it and everyone was keen.

That's good. Although I'm not religious in real life, when it comes to the cleric class, it would be interesting to establish—before the adventure begins—how he converted and how he became a delusional prophet of the end of the world.

The four classes - fighter, magic-user, cleric, thief - as columns. A series of rows labeled: before adventuring, adventuring, between adventuring, mentorship, leadership, retirement, death. Some intersections are labeled. For example, fighter<>leadership is "stronghold."

Noodled this up the other day, still thinking about it

1. Extrapolating the implied setting of OD&D is an interesting exercise to me. What makes a fighter a fighter? He is in the fighting "social class."

2. Being explicit about game phases is interesting to me. We need to do a better job of this.

I’m realizing I don’t want to play rules light TTRPGs. I also don’t care for games that are crunchy.

I want “rules-bright” ttrpg. Games that have smart rules that reinforce the game’s themes.

And I feel like I’m not alone.
