There's an open goal for any chancellor who aligns capital gains tax with income tax: why should someone who works for their income pay more tax on their income (tax + NI) than someone who makes income from having money already?

If you think that black and brown faces in advertising is linked to "legitimate concerns" about mass migration, it does suggest that you think that all black and brown people are foreigners. Which, for a party whose current leader is black and whose previous leader was brown, is quite something.

It’s a pharmacy as well, dispensing medicines, pick-me-ups, balms: if symptoms persist, please consult your local bookseller; it’s a tailor’s, offering a made-to-measure service to achieve the perfect fit;   and a hardware store, with a range of empowering tools to fix you up, recharge your batteries, switch on lightbulbs. Its walls are lined with treasure as precious as any jeweller’s, and twice as bright. Spines shine gold, silver, sapphire, emerald;   there are diamonds amongst them. It’s a garden centre, a place where ideas get planted and a thousand stories bloom, and a greengrocer, selling fresh, locally-sourced produce, as vital as your five-a-day and more readily consumed.

It’s a multiscreen cinema. Peek behind the curtain of each jacket and you’ll find a movie waiting silently to begin. A stationer’s supplying notepads, reams of paper, with the words conveniently filled in   to save you both the time and bother. A wholefood store and a fast-food joint. A cosy haven from the cold. A friendly, family restaurant: Today’s special will revive a flagging spirit and restore a lagging soul.   It’s a tourist information centre equipped with maps and helpful guides to steer us on our way. A busy square in which a whole town gathers or just a place to hold the world at bay   for a few untroubled stolen minutes. Compulsory volunteering is a bit of a clunky phrase, I'm sure there's a single word you can use for forcing someone to work for no pay. It'll come to me.

Here’s an idea. Why not process all the people that come over on the boats and see who they are and what they can do for the Uk. Put them to work, get them paying taxes, treat them like human beings and stop thinking because they are brown they are bad. Just an idea……

Not sure day one of the latest ID card rollout went very well at all, not least because the government couldn’t answer the absolute core question about why they’re being introduced.

The case is that digital ID will be required for anyone to get work. The problem is ID is already mandatory. 🧵

So as part of my day job I regularly have to check people's right to be in the UK, via a UK passport, or an eVisa/share code.
