About a third of the way though and really enjoying. I'll note that if Captain Marcus isn't at least a little bit inspired by Commander of the Watch, Lord Vimes, then I'll eat my affordable leather boots serving as a metaphor for the increased costs associated with poverty.

If your theory of ethics is making you do horrible things it's not because "ethics is counterintuitive". It's because your ethics are bad.

Not quite: in incremental sat solving, you want to "un-learn" literals. This is more finicky than un making branching choices.

...that involve that new constraint!
Maybe this is part of the reason mathematicians love groups.

Things get more subtle when dealing with, e.g. Boolean constraints, but maybe I'll explain that some other time.

Any other cool examples?

31.07.2025 15:38 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

One example is lists of linear constraints. Because of the Farkas lemma, we know that only linear operations on constraints are necessary to find a contradiction, and linear operations are always invertible.

So adding a constraint can be "undone" by simply undoing the operations...

... But this generality comes at a steep performance price: typically you need many indirections, and memory usage gets quite strained, GC becomes mandatory, etc.

In cases with more structure, it becomes useful to learn how to "undo" actions more cleverly than keeping a pointer to the old data.

I was nervous because I didn't know what immutable data structures were.

As it turns out, I actually didn't know what *mutable* structures were!

So that was lucky.

But there's more than one way to skin a cat. Functional data structures are convenient ways to get very generic backtracking...
