Bruce Belland told me that when he and David Somerville wrote songs at BMG in LA, Mac Davis played them "In the Ghetto" which he then pitched to Sammy Davis Jr, who passed. Mac sang it at a civil-rights rally & Jesse said pitch it "to Elvis—to give it a wider audience." The rest is history.
