When my neighborhood got route improvements protected arterial routes were clearly safer and more usable.

Playing with symbology and the SDOT crash data. Red translucent circles are pedestrian or cyclist serious injuries or fatalities, so circle looks darker when they stack. For the heatmap (blue fuzzy) I used all ped/cyc crashes with any injuries. This is just District 5, because I live here.

Famous Appleyard study that showed the amount of car traffic on a street powerfully affects the amount of social interaction on that street. Obviously, but before Appleyard, it hadnβt really been studied & proven.
Donβt ever let anyone tell you that streets canβt be vibrant places to foster friendships and connect with neighbours. But as Donald Appleyard illustrated many decades ago, the volume & speed of traffic, and the overall design of the streets, are absolute social life dealbreakers. #StickyStreets

17.11.2024 18:59 β π 41 π 6 π¬ 0 π 0Barcelona has metro, trams, buses, bike-lanes, and walkable (& sit-able) streets. They also have these electric βtrackless trams,β which are smooth-riding long buses that look like trams (which are considered cooler so it might help with ridership). I admit, they ARE very cool. Thoughts? #Barcelona
16.11.2024 15:55 β π 576 π 66 π¬ 60 π 32Since it was Madison's lampoon newspaper, The Onion's headlines always helped me process terrible events. 14.11.2024 17:20 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0New to Seattle? November is historically the rainiest month, and with the time change, the sun sets before 5PM until Jan 25th. Hereβs a few thoughts on how to make the most of it π§΅:
1) First off, ignore people who insist you have to innately love it or you donβt belong here.
Transit agencies are in dire need of $$, and the federal government will offer none over the next few years.
It's all up to states and cities to avoid a downward spiral.
This is exactly the right move, and not a moment too soon.

07.11.2024 21:14 β π 25 π 3 π¬ 0 π 0NEW: βDo bike lanes really cause more traffic congestion? Here's what the research says. Studies from around the world show bike lanes ease congestion, reduce emissions & are a boon to businesses.β
And removing them would cost a lot & make traffic worse.
