This has been gnawing at me for a week now, so I'm going to just say it.

If you are social climber in a relatively small space, people see you.

You may get where you want, but stepping on and over people isn't the way to do it, even with a smile on your face.

Last night was our annual Candlekeep Presents gathering, where we come together to share our love of the Forgotten Realms.

In addition to our usual shenanigans and our annual pins, we were able to give out some lovely swag from Wizards @dndbeyond.bsky.social.

Ready to end some friendships at Gen Con.

Take the time to hype your friends. To the public, to their faces, whatever the moment calls for. It costs you nothing but a few seconds, but it's proof that their well-being matters to you even when it doesn't benefit you in the least.

Fly, but be sure you have a nest to soar back home to.

I want people to succeed. I want to see all the creative stuff they have to offer. But I want them to eat, to live safely, to be *secure* first.

Take risks in life, sure. But don't sacrifice your security pursuing things that won't sufficiently reward you for your efforts.

But it's not just the precarious nature of creative fields.

It's also that the grind mentality means that so often, people can't or don't or won't spend the time to work on the necessary security.

I've seen so very many people, from my age down to ten, fifteen years younger—supremely talented folks—word very hard on creative endeavors but fail to turn those *gigs* into *careers* because the support systems and infrastructures aren't there.

Some uncomfortable truths:

As I get older, I realize more and more that being happy is less about feeling fulfilled than it is about being secure to pursue fulfillment. And security often requires a lot of hard, boring, sustained work before it materializes.

You know, a super-lottery win would be absolutely awesome, but I'd be more than happy to suddenly find enough money to ensure gainful employment and appropriate medical/dental/mental healthcare coverage for a bunch of folk for a year or two.

I'm just fine, but I've got some folks I'd LOVE to cover.

Hire. Her.

And me. Hire us both.

But right now,

The OP seemed to suggest that a proper wage was a stretch goal, rather than a baseline for the project. I should have been much clearer.

Agreed, to the extent that the crowdfunding campaign guarantees the creatives a minimum standard of pay before stretch goals.

Otherwise, it's forcing creatives to spend extra time as marketers in the hopes of getting paid appropriately. A pay boost is great, but a proper *initial* rate is better.

I dunno. At a certain level, I'm okay with paying for a luxury like Netflix if the service continues to improve.

What irks me is when content disappears or shows I like get canceled and then they tell us they want to hike up the price. As if they didn't just save a bunch of money with a write-off.
