Unfortunately "you have infinite money after the final fantasy set, just get more printers" isn't really feasible either, I have it on good knowledge that curled foils plaguing magic cards for half a decade was the teething problems of two new print factories getting everything just right.

It's 5 "microdrops", each at a specific price point. The MOST charitable interpretation is that "printing enough/on demand" isn't feasible anymore because their printers are running magic cards 24/7 already and so they're trying to see what price point brings down demand to match the limited supply.

They're testing the full limit of player's willingness to put up with bullshit.
