These discoveries reveal how brain dynamics are shaped by both anatomy and arousal state, with important implications for neural information processing during sleep.

- Sleep slow waves partially explain these timescale changes
- Different spatiotemporal integration patterns emerge in each state (broadband at long distances in wake; gamma at short distances in sleep)

In this work, we leverage a big intracranial EEG dataset to characterize neural timescales in wake and sleep. Our key findings:
- Neural timescales (both broadband and gamma) lengthen during sleep compared to wake
- These timescales show inverse patterns along the cortical hierarchy

Studying neural dynamics is crucial for understanding how the brain processes information. Neural timescales, in particular, reflect fundamental properties of neural populations and may help in understanding how the brain flexibly adapts in different physiological states like wake and sleep.

The cortical hierarchy of timescales is very cool, did you know that it vanishes during REM sleep?
