A host organelle integrates stolen chloroplasts for animal photosynthesis Sea slugs steal foreign chloroplasts and store them in specialized organelles that facilitate photosynthesis and eventual digestion to mediate starvation resistance.

Remarkable paper explaining how sea slugs maintain chloroplasts obtained by kleptoplasty active for many month & eventually digest them for resources www.cell.com/cell/fulltex...

Omaya Dudin Interview with Omaya Dudin, who uses Ichthyosporea as models to study how and why unicellular organisms evolved multicellularity at the University of Geneva.

90% of you probably don’t need to read this.
But maybe some of you are curious & 10% will feel seen. Or a little less alone. This isn’t about seeking sympathy.
It’s about sharing something hard to say out loud;
partly to heal, partly in case someone needs to hear it too. (1/3)

Really proud to have had a small contribution to this work. Shane Farrell and Doug Rasher led the way showing that climate change can cause feedback effects that may make it difficult to restore ecosystems. In this case kelp is inhibited by red algae that replaces it

Figure 4. MemBrain v2 end-to-end workflow detects periodic phycobilisome organization. A: Raw tomogram slice of EMD-31244. B: Out-of-the-box MemBrain-seg segmentation (light blue). C: A single membrane instance can be visualized in Surforama and manually annotated with GT phycobilisome positions (magenta). D: MemBrain-pick localizes particles (trained with data from C) on all membranes in the tomogram. E: MemBrain-stats computes Ripley’s O statistic using the positions from D with a bin size of 5nm. The distance between peaks (35 nm) was measured to estimate chain unit spacings.
