In 1858, two years before he was elected president, Abraham Lincoln ran for the U.S. Senate as a Republican against Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, engaging him in a series of seven formal debates throughout Illinois. On October 13 they met for the sixth debate in downtown Quincy, just blocks east of the Mississippi River. This bronze relief sculpture by Lorado Taft, completed in 1936, stands in Washington Park facing 5th Street. It shows Lincoln speaking while Douglas listens just to his left.
