As Thanksgiving approaches, we should take time to thank the people who provide essential services that keep our society functioning: nurses, janitors, air traffic controllers, teachers, busboys, doctors, sanitation workers, deportation lawyers, daycare staff . . . add to the list in your comments!

One of my past achievements is a micro-budget produced screenplay titled Frances Stein. It's a solid story and I've wanted to write it in novel form, but couldn't figure out how to structure it. But as of yesterday, I think I have it figured out. We shall see!

In that phase of querying for book 1 in a series and not quite ready to start book 2. Not a bad place to be?

Tho I know hard work is coming soon . . . .

Carusse listened, but she was more interested in the people than in their chores. She found it difficult not to stare at all the unmatched individuals, especially since they often chose to work in pairs, which drew attention to their not being identical in ways that made Carusse feel uneasy. Two women carrying a load of wood threaded their way toward the cooking fire, moving intrinsically as a team though they spoke not a word between them. A man and woman tended a stand of drying meat, he turning one piece and she turning the next in rhythm. Two men, one gray-whiskered and the other with bushy black hair, hauled a double basket full of fresh mushrooms on their heads with such precision it was as if they were born of the same womb.

The first time Carusse experienced being among strangers, she was eight years old and had never before left home. Her maas and daas had made it a habit at the dinner table to talk about their various outings in the world, to share them with Carusse. She listened raptly, especially about how singles were viewed as suspicious. She didn’t quite understand what was so suspicious about herself, but she was learning to adjust her view of the world to this other one, in which her mere existence was a threat. Her parents probably understood that her curiosity would get the best of her before long, and she might put herself in real danger if they didn’t give her some hands-on experience.
The plan for this first outing was for all four parents to take Carusse and either Mare or Nola to visit a religious celebration in a more distant town, meaning they would be less likely to run into people who knew them. Mare was more adventurous and would have been the better choice, but Nola pitched such a fit about being left alone that they ended up taking her instead. Mare balked a little, but the maas gave them all a promise that the next trip they would swap the sisters, and that seemed to pacify her.

I've had trouble coming up with comps for my book. It's soft speculative or sci-fi, second world, focused on character, sociological, pre-industrial, and not fantasy.
Suggestions?

Those themes for sure. Also found family, hope, and courage. The book I'm working on covers these themes as well, so definitely my kind of story!

I’ve read two books by Rivers Solomon this summer (thanks to recommendations from a queer bookstore), and I really recommend them to anyone who likes fantasy or sci-fi but also books that interrogates social issues and structures.

The books I’ve read are β€œAn Unkindness of Ghosts” + β€œSorrowland”.

I think the message needs to be stronger and simpler: Impeach. Only when enough protestors call for that enough times and on enough fronts will the congress begin to move.
