It might be the wine talking but the Lineker goodbye on MOTD feels like the crushing end of something. One of those last lot of connections with the football tradition of my youth, the romance of ‘90 and sanity in the madness of recent years. Someone who breathed values into the walls of the BBC.

These players don’t have it. They weren’t equipped to set their own standards. They needed it instilling in them. Edwards couldn’t change his style when it became clear they needed management other than an arm round them. He should undoubtedly have gone sooner.

The supporters of this club used to tear players and managers apart. Then, after nothing had worked for five years in the conference, we tried something different on the advice of John Still and out of sheer desperation. This season it stopped working.
