Turns out the 20mph limit was great idea! Two years on from the controversial policy, it's becoming increasingly clear that the doubters were wrong

Seed dispersal disruption limits tropical forest regrowth | PNAS Identifying linkages between biodiversity loss and climate change is required for understanding the scope of these interconnected challenges and de...

Our new study shows how animal biodiversity loss is a climate problem: tropical forests recover far less carbon where seed dispersers have declined.

We’re not just losing forests – we’re losing their ability to regrow.

Reversing that trend could align biodiversity recovery with climate solutions.🧡

The way some behaviours such as littering are considered a β€˜fair target’ for private enforcement services (i.e. where firms make a profit from enforcement) while drivers are said to be unfairly targeted to raise revenue.

Road gritting, snow and ice clearance | Merton Council

Prioritisation of gritting. Here’s an example. The maps are interesting. For roads it’s a network that is gritted. For pavements it seems more piecemeal. www.merton.gov.uk/streets-park...

Of course if you’re lucky enough to have a driveway you may be able to put the skip there and park your car on road at no extra charge

By contrast:

Civil Enforcement Officers cannot deal with obstructions of the highway or parking on the pavement (unless the vehicle is parked adjacent to yellow lines). You will need to contact the police on the non-emergency number 101 to report these offences.

The Council will, after an initial informal request, serve a 21 Day Notice on you, the occupier, to cut back the offending vegetation. If you do not comply with the Notice, the Council may carry out the work itself and recover its costs in doing so from you, through the courts if necessary.

Pavement blocking - harder on hedges than on cars?

West Berks (chosen at random): It is an offence under the Highways Act 1980 to allow trees, hedges, shrubs and so on to obstruct the highway.

The world did not end when the bridge was closed for two years between 2015 & 17.
Twenty-four thousand pedestrians and cyclists use it daily; those numbers will only increase if motor vehicles are excluded.
Bonus: the bridge will need a lot less maintenance!
