Matt Elliott: Toronto’s hunt for the Parkside camera vandal has come up empty-handed. But here’s the real mystery It's a mystery why the heck is it taking so long for Toronto city hall to deal with the real, underlying issue on Parkside Drive.

My @thestar.com column: sure, the identity of the Parkside Drive speed camera vandal is intriguing, but here’s the real mystery: why is it taking Toronto city hall so damn long to redesign this street?

On the city’s incredibly slow response to a speeding problem.

Ha, I maintain it is the only actually Good Star Wars thing. Others have been fun, and even interesting, but it kind of stands on its own.

Thing is, most Liberal voters aren’t ride-or-die for the Liberal party. They want competence above all, and with Carney already backtracking on promised spending, he wasn’t going to solidify a political base by siding with the country’s second most hated company. (Rogers probably number one?)

I escaped a heat wave in Toronto, went to New Brunswick, where it is like half the temp… and still got a sunburn that would embarrass a lobster. Turns out the sun is also a giant ball of fire here.

For me it was a little like how Elden Ring clicked better than other souls games had as I never felt stuck on one obstacle. Get stuck, just look somewhere else. By the time you’re back to where you hit a wall, it’s with greater knowledge. Ideally.

Why does the TTC use artificial voices for stop announcements? I genuinely feel like a real human recording would feel so much better. Finite number of stops…

Canadian/American relations right now feel like a divorce, long in the making. I hope that in years to come, we can be friendly again, but I think we’re done. And we’ll be better for it.

Just finished reading @mikeduncan.bsky.social ‘s history of the beginning of the end of the Roman republic last night. Fascinating and a fun read, though this year has the Pompey quote ‘cease quoting laws to those of us with swords’ sounding pretty loud.

Wasn’t necessarily expecting the most interesting summation of the last week to come from a podcast after a discussion of the movie The Saint, but I guess that’s what I like about Unclear and Present Danger, ha.

Pedant’s

Foot soldiers in the War on Error,
They’re here to save us from ourselves,
With Fowler’s Modern English Usage
(first edition, nineteen twelve).

They scrutinise each word we write
For typos, gaffes, et cetera,
Correcting all the dumb mistakes
To make our grammar betterer.

They sigh and tut and tell us off
For the rules we have forsaken
And chart this nation’s steep decline
By the care we should of taken.

Custodians of the King’s English,
They merely serve to keep it pure
And restrict, they hope, the ignorant
To three mistakes or less.

And in doing so, they hold no fear
they will deprive a thing of life:
for it’s not important what is said,
what matters is that its right.

I’m fed up with people pointing out all the mistakes in my poetry so I’ve written them this poem; it’s called ‘Pedant’s’.

GO trains really need to work on their boarding. Feels like it is still built around the assumption that people are only travelling in one direction? Instead you get a flood of people trying to board while people from the second level are still coming down the stairs, and everyone gets stuck.

Tip if you’re working on a AAA game - mute its name on social media until it’s out. Avoids a lot of frustration, ha.

Behind F1's Velvet Curtain If you wanted to turn someone into a socialist you could do it in about an hour by taking them for a spin around the paddock of a Formula 1 race. The kind of money I saw will haunt me forever.

Making sure everyone has read Kate Wagner’s absolutely terrific — like a genuinely all-time, Grantland, SBN-in-its-heyday, talk about it 10 years later-style joy to read — F1 article that was mysteriously removed from the Road & Track website shortly after publication web.archive.org/web/20240301...

The noclip doc on Return to Monkey Island is well worth a watch. The game is also well worth playing! I feel like a bunch of people who I know would love it missed it on release?

The more interesting list to make for people would be ‘five things you can talk about until everyone around you has made excuses and wandered off at the drop of a hat’.

the collapse of google search as a useful source of accurate information is a boon to screenwriters everywhere. "why didn't they just google the house to see if it was haunted" they did and the top ten entries were identical automatically generated real estate ads on different seo-scumming websites

I was trying to think of why I don’t walk home from work more often. Did it tonight and remembered it’s because of the whole ‘not wanting to be run over by drivers doing 80+ and die’ thing. I really hate Oakville.
