@hackneyabbott.bsky.social "This idea that McSweeney was an election genius ignores the figures.. in '24 the Lab vote was more or less the same as '19. What happened was the Tory vote split"

both are smiling. lots of empty wine glasses on the table.

Sorry but why the fuck would vou *not* want to recreate 2006?Pre-financial crash pre-austerity, pre-Brexit, pre-inflation. Britain's economicallv healthy, decent public services, largely competent government, fairly amiable politica disputes. What kind of person prefers this period to that?

2006 was ofc peak salad days for the Sensibles: between the Invasion of Iraq that they could justify away & the 2007/8 Great Financial Crisis that exploded all the contradictions of their worldview that they had refused to recognise, despite many people expending lots of energy to get them to notice

As an historian I often wonder how people learned nothing from the twentieth century and how we have fallen into the mess and rise of fascism yet again and here we are. People simply *don't care* that they are in a military alliance with and dependant on a fascist state when capitalism requires it.

On Monday, a Dundee employment tribunal ruled a narrow win for Sandie Peggie, the nurse who complained about sharing a changing room with a transgender doctor. But the lengthy judgment also takes on the pivotal question that has been challenging employers, lawyers and campaign groups since April - does a supreme court judgment mean that transgender people must now be excluded from same-sex facilities that align with their chosen gender? Does it amount to a bathroom ban or not?

A half-sane country would not have organisations and businesses having to closely watch inflammatory media coverage of employment tribunals for wormsign: for indications to tell them whether or not they need to build an annexe on their buildings for particular employees to piss in.

This man won one of the largest majorities in UK electoral history, is a white guy who was a prosecutor and prior to the election was beloved by basically all sections of the press. The fact he's been unable to use any of this to achieve anything is incredible.

[Scene is the entrance cabin to a NATIONAL TRUST PROPERTY AND GARDENS]

 1
NATIONAL TRUST EMPLOYEE [inside cabin]:

Hello there

2
[A young family - two parents two kids - have arrived at the front desk].

DAD:

Hi - do you have an activity trail, for the kids?

3
NT EMPLOYEE:

Of course – you’re just in time for the Autumn Gammon Trail!

4
MUM:
That sounds fun, doesn’t it kids?

5
NT EMPLOYEE [handing an activity sheet and pencils to the kids]:

Every autumn, the Reform Trust gammons flock back to the National Trust for the AGM. Just follow the trail round the grounds, and see how many you can spot!

6
NT EMPLOYEE [hearing something in the gardens]:

Listen - that's their call

[Calls emanating from the landscape]:

tut-tut
woke-woke

7
NT EMPLOYEE [showing the family an apparently empty fenced enclosure with some bushes in]:

They are extremely sensitive and fragile...
But you can bring them out of hiding if you put a little sign down mentioning slavery.

8
KIDS [pointing]:
There they are!

[Some little red faced PEOPLE wearing Barbour jackets and gilets emerge cautiously from the bushes. They are creeping towards a TINY SIGN in the middle of the enclosure].

[Little people noises]:
woke-woke
tut-tut
woke-woke

9
[Close-up of the TINY SIGN - we can read that it says]:

Slavery had a bit to do with building this massive house.

[Noises from the little people again as they inspect the tiny sign]:

tut-tut
woke-woke

10
MUM [pointing]:
What's that one doing there?

NT EMPLOYEE:
Oh, that's so sweet…

11
[We see that one of the people is sat on a rock, with a little laptop open on a tree stump, and they are furiously typing away].

NT EMPLOYEE:
I think he's writing a column for the Daily Telegraph…

12
[We see close up to the little person’s screen, it is a word document reading]:

Are National Trust scones secretly WOKE?

[ends]

My rough view of fascism's rise 🧡

There are always reactionaries, in every human society

They disproportionately benefit from early phases of new media technologies because mis/disinformation helps them and institutional and cultural antibodies haven't been developed
