id say try the first episode of each table when they are split up, if you dont feel any of them then yeah id personally just call it there
but as each table has different playstyles some of them may appeal to you, some may not.

Its probably because of ease of adating the story
a full trainers journey is too long for one movie and a lot of low stakes battles. i.e f you lose a gm battle you can just try again
So they need something shorter, that has more stakes
