The US gains massive advantages from the current situation. Why should Europeans (Inc Brits) pay for US bases, use US payments systems that have massive margins & pay no tax. Same for tech & other companies. Why should Europe finance massive & risky dollar debts. This is going to get ugly

New piece on the strategic vacuum in Washington when it comes to understanding what a more independent, sovereign Europe actually means.

I worry that even a more transatlantic-minded future administration will adapt very poorly to no longer being able to call all the shots in the alliance.

If you want to know what Reform would be like in power, look at how it threatened Bangor University | Gaby Hinsliff A debating society didnโ€™t want to invite two figures connected to the party to speak. Cue an authoritarian response, says Guardian columnist Gaby Hinsliff

I read three student newspapers in the course of writing this & on the off chance any student journalists at York, Exeter or Cambridge are reading this; God youโ€™re all so much better than student journalism was in my day www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Red outline of three men, swinging a hammer; socialist-style; the arc of the swinging hammer is in gold "Soviet Economy: The Cold War"

The Cold War continues this week with the first part of a video series looking at the development of the Soviet economy. This episode looks at it's roots in the Russian Empire, through the Civil War and the Stalin years to the changes made by Khrushchev

Apple is clearly in real trouble. iOS 26 still doesnโ€™t actually work properly. iPhone failure rates have gone through the roof. Apple products have become really boring. They have gone from they just work, to they just donโ€™t

Itโ€™s also the institutions. The media, political parties, Congress, Senate & Supreme Court all prostituted themselves

McSweeney โ€˜asked if Mandelson US embassy role could be pa... PMโ€™s chief of staff sought advice on behalf of disgraced former Labour peer, senior government sources claim

McSweeney, Keir Starmerโ€™s chief of staff, is widely believed to have been the driving force behind the former Labour peer taking on the ambassador role after the pair worked together on the 2024 general election campaign. observer.co.uk/news/politic...

Would be ironic that a British PM is brought down by an American scandal while US politicians get off.

Definitely seems like they destroyed the country on purpose.

Nothing to see here. Just the head of Palantir saying Brexit was brilliant because it destroyed the UK economy to create cheap assets for the likes of him to scoop up.

Starmer has given Palantir huge contracts to run swathes of our services.

Itโ€™s all rotten to the core and Labour are complicit.

Apple & Google removed ICE tracking apps in their app stores.

TikTok reportedly suppressed videos criticizing ICE & the shooting of Alex Pretti.

Meta blocked Facebook groups tracking ICE & links to a database of agents that the government wants to keep secret.

Big Tech is enabling Trump's regime.

But find Canada, Europe etc will not accept sitting under a time bomb like the dollar. That will likely mean relations will probably worsen. Take the UK. It wants a new relationship with the EU but is really struggling as the EU will not put itself in a position where it has to trust the UK

Thinking it through this situation means the rest of the west canโ€™t rely on US tech, payment systems, dollar, US military. As soon as those states move on that their relations with the US will rapidly come apart. I think future administrations will try to repair the damage

It sounds like UK US relations have hit a break point in the last few days. Starmer seems to have given permission for senior Labour Ministers and MPโ€™s to openly criticise Trump. Any trade deal now is toast

None of these creatures are taking any responsibility for this mess or even fixing it. Currently they are backing away from doing something about ICE despite executing a woman on camera. The US institutions are rotted through. Trump may fall but the institutions meant to defend democracy are gone

The incredibly lukewarm Democratic response on Greenland is being noticed in Europe, incidentally.

Chuck Schumer not finding a stronger word than โ€œquixoticโ€ for Trumpโ€™s plan to seize Greenland has been name checked to me more than once.

The US is so reliant on income from tech (eg payment systems are all US for no reason and they massively overcharge) that if u do you destroy the relationship. Economically the US is a basket case that relies on those incomes & debt to survive
