It's an interesting question... Doing either one really well isn't easy. For both, a ton of the learning curve is in the extensions, modules, libraries, etc. that add to the core language. Python lets you get away with things that many languages don't, but that's not necessarily a good thing... 🤷‍♂️

Can't speak for anyone else, but for some of the same reason(s) I've avoided going into management all my life...

A4.2) All of the above in part because pulling back from some of the earlier decisions carries costs for which we're not ready. Double down on the learning & understanding bits of your org. None of this works if you're operations-only and hoping providers do it all. #ciochat

A4.1) Cloud-smart but likely with an edge toward cloud-first in many orgs because everybody is still under pressure to optimize spend and focus on revenue generation, business opportunity enablement, etc. #ciochat

A3) I'm feeling lucky at the moment not to be in a multinational or a government-facing entity that needs FedRAMP / GovCloud. But, recent moves in the EU do seem to signal another bloc pulling away from US #cloud hegemony. #ciochat

A2) Not trying to compete in #AI model building, primary training, etc. gives more options for where to run the resulting inference workloads. The hardware and software options for that are all over the map from GPUs to baked in accelerators to #IBM #Spyre and more. #ciochat

A1.2) Sadly, that stemmed from every possible bad fit. Too little move to the #cloud? Problems! Too much? Problems! Wrong stuff or wrong order of moves? Problems! Public cloud success was always going to be a Goldilocks story. #ciochat

A1.1) As a "right tool for the job" person, I never went all-in on OpEx over CapEx #SaaS, or #cloud. All have big strengths, but all have big caveats. Not sure the discussion is still "quiet" about cost & complexity spirals and either repatriation or shuffles. #ciochat

I could easily be wrong, but if you're out-sourcing just about any part of that journey to understanding to someone (or something) else, you won't end up "understanding" nearly as much as you could have...

99.99% agreed, but part of their "vision" for artificial general / super intelligence (AGI/ASI) is that the AI models become self-sustaining and self-improving and these kinds of training runs are replaced by incremental learning. I'm not saying any of the current approaches will get there, but... 🤷‍♂️

Totally agreed! @legaleagle.tv brought up a good point in a video today. There's a widening spiral of new "documents" being created every day this drags on talking about the case(s), talking about talking about the case(s), and so on. Those should come out as well!

Doing those exact same things in the exact same ways as steps in a plan to achieve a business outcome re-frames the whole conversation. Achieving the business outcome may be a lag measure (not measurable until done), but every step ought to promise *and deliver* some measurable value along the way.

That's all about pushing the buttons / pulling the levers that are actually connected to something. You can "adopt" Agile, ITIL, DevOps, public cloud, tools, techniques, AI, etc. all day and not move the business needles in ways that make the board notice...

It seems a trifle Machiavellian, but inviting your CEO to some technical conference or even just a demo / meeting won't work unless you give them a reason to *want* to know more. That's the point of making the business case first. We can [business case], and [IT project/product] might get us there!

I only know of one very large company that hit a Y2K bug in production, and I don't know what the impact was. I do know that de-risking my organization, our customers, our suppliers, and the overall customer experience was job one. Making date fields longer was just the means to that end.

Some good points here, but current me (unlike younger me) says a "business case" is actually step one or possibly step zero of the journey. It's why priming the Y2K example with clippings made all the difference. That was putting the request in terms of money, risk, etc.

A4.1) The recent news items about Amazon and others "tightening up" their review processes are good examples of environments where you cannot wait for the review to find out how you're doing. Set & chart your own goals and wins. #ciochat

A4) I mash up "The First 90 Days" (with caveats), "Blue Ocean Strategy" (and sequels), and "Four Disciplines of Execution". Approach any new job w/ an open mind & thirst to learn. Keep your eyes open for sharks & pivot opportunities. Set your own goals & chart them. #ciochat

A3) Thought exp: walk up to anyone and ask "Would you say that you know yourself better than I know you?" (dangerous with a spouse) They all should say yes. As such, we have things we can learn from literally anyone. Get over that hurdle, and all #mentor rels open up. #ciochat

A2) In the last few orgs, the closest I ever saw to that was a deeply dysfunctional "old boy network" culture with less mentoring and more favoritism. Just one reason I'm not there anymore. #ciochat
