Some of you may recall this post. I thought I'd provide an update on how planning for my analog course is going...
It's been a mix of expected and unexpected, but welcome, surprises --

New poster! Only two weeks until my workshop βSails, Silk, and Ancient Seasβ. I am happy that so many students have taken an interest in ancient Mediterranean and Chinese seafaring. Reviewing their work and helping them refine their posters has taught me a lot about Chinese maritime history as well.

Donald Trump and Zohran Mamdani forge unlikely bond in the Oval Office
US president and New York Cityβs mayor-elect defy expectations after months of trading barbs
This wasn't "unlikely" β it was very predictable. Mamdani is shrewd and charismatic enough to know how to handle Trump face to face.

College cats of Oxford
Once upon a time, we featured an image of Magdalen's kitten, Ozymandias, in our newsletter. We figured it might be a gentle contrast to our regular diet of planning and local politics.
The grey ball ...
Walter de Staplecat, Simpkin IV, Teabag, Balthasar and Benny D Cat take the stage as we meet the college cats of Oxford. And, of course, Magdalenβs Ozymandias. Read on for our photo special. (Includes a cat map.) oxfordclarion.uk/college-cats...

When reading stories like this, I always find myself coming back to (self-)value. Students matter; their learning and development matters. Courses like this tell students they don't matter and that they aren't worth their lecturers' time. The consequences are horrifying and far-reaching.

βHow did the Ottoman state organize unfree labor - among others: captives, enslaved people, and convicts - to power its early modern navy?
I explore this question in my βBetween Two Spaces: Enslavement and Labor in the Early Modern Ottoman Navy.β 1/2

SILK-WASHING STREAM
In the small courtyard,
past the lattice window,
the colors of spring deepen.
The heavy unrolled curtains
sink the room into shadow.
Leaning against the railing,
I play wordlessly on my jade qin.
Clouds from distant caves
hasten the dusk.
A breeze blows in
misty rain.
The pear blossoms want
to wither.
I fear
I cannot stop them.
