Did it solve the immigration debate? Fuck no. Anti-immigration voices still say we have no control over immigration. That is quite literally the case Starmer is making this morning, despite having a front row seat for the end of free movement. After nearly a decade of mutilating the country to address the 'legitimate concerns' about immigration, we're still being told the precise same nonsense we were told in 2016, or in 2005.

This is why the references to other European countries are so unhelpful. The context in which they introduced ID cards was completely different. Those countries did not construct their system during a moment of anti-immigration hysteria, nor did they design them to catch illegal immigrants. And nor, for that matter, do they have a better debate about immigration. ID cards have not stopped Marine Le Pen's success in France or Alternative für Deutschland in Germany.

We have tried, again and again, to placate anti-immigrant forces by accepting the premise of their argument. We have ruined our country in order to satisfy them. We have torn families apart. This government is currently in the position of disemboweling itself in order to placate them. It never works, because the debate on immigration is not grounded in empiricism but in perception.

We’ve trashed the place over immigration. Brexit turned it into an ugly obsession that made us mad. Scrapping freedom of movement didn’t work. Losing our own rights just trapped us and our politicians and media won’t admit it.
So, on we go, playing the same hateful record… and failing.
