Having a rewire, so emptying the house as much as possible whilst also suffering with a cold/freshers flu. I'm definitely not thinking of how it all comes back together.

A peerage can only be removed by an act of parliament. The last time that happened was in 1917.

Our House of Lords is completely unfit for purpose, and the likes of "Lady Mone" can keep her position for life without consequences.

Did it solve the immigration debate? Fuck no. Anti-immigration voices still say we have no control over immigration. That is quite literally the case Starmer is making this morning, despite having a front row seat for the end of free movement. After nearly a
decade of mutilating the country to address the 'legitimate concerns' about immigration, we're still being told the precise same nonsense we were told in 2016, or in 2005.

This is why the references to other European countries are so unhelpful. The context in which they introduced ID cards was completely different. Those countries did not construct their system during a moment of anti-immigration hysteria, nor did they design them to catch illegal immigrants. And nor, for that matter, do they have a better debate about immigration. ID cards have not stopped Marine Le Pen's success in France or Alternative fรผr Deutschland in Germany.

We have tried, again and again, to placate anti-immigrant forces by accepting the premise of their argument. We have ruined our country in order to satisfy them. We have torn families apart. This government is currently in the position of disemboweling itself in order to placate them. It never works, because the debate on immigration is not grounded in empiricism but in perception.

Weโ€™ve trashed the place over immigration. Brexit turned it into an ugly obsession that made us mad. Scrapping freedom of movement didnโ€™t work. Losing our own rights just trapped us and our politicians and media wonโ€™t admit it.
So, on we go, playing the same hateful recordโ€ฆ and failing.

3. โ this is not the moment for an incredibly expensive increase in state surveillance infrastructure to be run for profit by private tech firms just before Labour ushers in an (even more) authoritarian right wing government.

All political tribes can be hypocritical but the right's current level of hypocrisy on free speech is deliberate. It's an assertion of power not a blindspot.

Since Brexit became a reality & the transition started (which still hasnโ€™t finished) every stage has been a shit show. Government has been under prepared at each change & more barriers to trade imposed on imports and exports. The right wing press doesnโ€™t write about it because it doesnโ€™t suit them.

How should Labour and the Tories respond to the populist right? Lessons from Europe The evidence suggests traditional parties that ape the populist radical rightโ€™s policies risk boosting their rivals instead of reclaiming voters.

The body of evidence showing that when centrist parties adopt the priorities and talking points of the far right, they torpedo themselves is vast and powerful. Yet Keir Starmer's Labour Party seems determined to ignore it.

I go. I try. And I will keep trying, even though it feels like a losing battle. Because I remember the whole point of the far-right astroturfing of social media is to make it feel like a losing battle, to make us give up.

Anyway, a few snippets on small boat crossings and immigration.

POWDER KEG UK ABOUT TO BLOW UP AS BRITAIN STANDS ON THE BRINK OF THE WHOLE NATION DESCENDING INTO CIVIL WAR

by Our Apocalypse Staff
HELENA HANDCART

THE entire country has turned into a tinderbox, one spark and the whole thing could turn into a raging inferno of hatred and violence. All it needs is one little push - preferably from us - and this once peaceful island will explode.
It may not take much, maybe an article with some badly researched facts, maybe some exaggerated and provocative hyperbole, and before we know it there'll be blood on the streets, and flames too, as millions of furious citizens attack each other, the police, and the emergency services,
not to
mention the armed forces should they tragically be called in to deal with the hate-filled mob rampaging through our cities, towns and villages, armed with burning torches and pitchforks, calling for justice, free speech and the immediate death of everyone they don't like. (Top journalism, Ed).
Make no mistake, if Britain even exists by next week, we will run this piece again until someone sparks the tinderbox on the brink of the powderkeg that... (cont. for entire summer).
