Iain Douglas-Hamilton, Elephant Expert and Protector, Dies Born into a British aristocratic family, he turned his empathy and understanding of the world’s largest land mammals to the cause of saving them from poachers.

Iain Douglas-Hamilton, a world-renowned expert on elephants who was one of the first to study their social behavior in the wild and dedicated his later years to fight poaching, has died at 83. He was one of the most visible advocates for protecting the animal, and founded Save the Elephants.

Spent the weekend going through family stuff and found some terrific photos of Berkeley from sometime in the 1930s, where my grandparents met as students. My grandfather was a College of Mining grad (the building still exists, the college doesn’t) and on the university polo team - horse, not water!
