Figure 1: The important dimensions of CAILs across research and education; clockwise from 12 o’clock: Con-
ceptual Clarity is the idea that terms should refer. Critical Thinking is deep engagement with the relationships
between statements about the world. Decoloniality is the process of de-centring and addressing dominant
harmful views and practices. Respecting Expertise is the epistemic compact between professionals and society.
Slow Science is a disposition towards preferring psychologically, techno-socially, and epistemically healthy
practices. The lines between dimensions represent how they are interwoven both directly and indirectly.

UCSD (30% acceptance rate) was just profiled in a story where it stated they went from 30 freshmen in remedial math 5 years ago to 900 last year.

I’m a Professor. A.I. Has Changed My Classroom, but Not for the Worse.

Interesting and well written experiences of an English professor updating their curriculum to be AI resistant. Recommended reading: www.nytimes.com/2025/11/25/m...

On the left, a narrow, glass-fronted display case with a mix of letterpress, hand-bound, antiquarian, and collectors' books; stretching off to the right, 8-foot bookcases laden with literary and contemporary commercial fiction, about one thousand books out of the 6-7 thousand in that section. LED lighting and light-colored wood cases and flooring keep the room feeling relatively spacious despite the sheer quantity of books.

Communities need used-book shops.

As the trends in our world are increasingly standardized and entrenched by "predictive" technologies that stifle innovation and reduce human actions into economic categories...

We need a full range of possibilities for readers and communities to explore and share.

In wartime, it is customary (the law?) to render aid to enemy sailors when their vessel is sunk and/or no longer capable of fighting.

Yes, LinkedIn’s self-presentation and promotion first and foremost. Constructive debate is near verboten and authentic connection is stilted because of both of these.

My twitter folks either remained and mostly disengaged or moved to LinkedIn or idk. I’m not a fan of the β€œI’m excited to announce…” culture on LinkedIn. So, now flit between academic groups somewhat related to my discipline on here.

Thanks for sharing your story.

One purpose is thick descriptionβ€”to deeply understand one or a few experiences embedded in particular contexts.

I’m also a quant but I have deep respect for my colleagues who toil away with qual work. It seems so challenging and uncertain. πŸ˜€

It's time to remove laptops from classrooms.

24 experiments: Students learn more and get better grades after taking notes by hand than typing. It's not just because they're less distractedβ€”writing enables deeper processing and more images.

The pen is mightier than the keyboard.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

This isn’t fair to service members. The office of legal counsel is saying the actions are legal. Asking individual service members to 100% go to prison and destroy their lives is not the right approach.

The only ”solution” being considered is even more tech. Zoom, smartphones, social media, and now LLMs…I genuinely feel sad for the Gen Z and Gen A who will never know what it’s like to read books deeply, have and develop your own ideas, or be alone in your own thoughts without distraction

The Penguin Books vending machine at Exeter train station

I do like the Penguin Books vending machine at Exeter train station but I won't be truly happy until there's another one next to it solely selling rare freakbeat 45s made between 1965 and 1967.
