16% of the UK population was born overseas (21/22 census)
12% of UK prisoners were born overseas
Therefore people born overseas are less likely to be in jail than people born in the UK.
That should be the headline.

The thing about all these fucking statements now from world leaders calling for the food to be let in to Gaza: you have the ability to impose sanctions on Israel and every second you spend talking instead of imposing them is a collaborationist lie.

Or, just spitballing here, the government could address the genuine issues, such as housing issues, cost of living crisis, and confront disinformation spread about immigration to help better inform people, rather than pandering to xenophobia and exacerbating hostile rhetoric and scapegoating.

🚨Working with @megandaigle.bsky.social & Leen we combined @aligngender.bsky.social expertise on norms & @odi.global expertise on #humanitarian protection to make a clear case for continued & improved gender analysis at this dangerous political moment of anti-gender mobilizations & aid cuts. What we analyzed isn't *just* language - it's what happens in practice as a result of those narratives. People fall through the cracks, or they're treated like passive victims instead of being given space to speak/act. We've got more studies coming that will link it more strongly to practice.

How we talk and think about things (language) shapes what we do about them (design/delivery). So, sometimes it's about design, yes, but sometimes it's about assumptions that individual humanitarians make as they deliver a program or apply a framework/tool.

We need a full-throated defence of immigration. As a social good, an economic good, and a human good.

Because this β€œthe racists have a point, people hate immigrants, so here’s an even more batshit policy than the other guys” approach is a dangerous race to the bottom

Tonight’s huge climbdown is testament to the countless disabled people who have tirelessly fought these cuts. Yes, UC was a loss and there’s more to do on PIP, but let’s not underplay this: a government with a vast majority has been forced to u-turn. Because of the disabled community.

This is the Home Office behaving exactly as intended:

The visa fees paid by a grieving widower to bring his wife to the UK are kept. Despite the face that she literally died before she made it to UK soil.

We need to rip this broken institution apart.

Israel kills innocent Palestinians. Activists spray-paint a plane. Guess which the UK government calls terrorism | Sally Rooney If Palestine Action becomes a proscribed group, writing these words of support could become a serious offence. It’s vital we fight this alarming attack on free speech, says writer Sally Rooney

β€œLaw-abiding protest has so far failed to stop the genocide. More than 50,000 innocent children have been killed or injured. In what circumstances could civil disobedience ever be justified if not now?”

Iran’s nuclear programme is a grave threat to international security, and Canada has been consistently clear that Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon. Β

While U.S. military action taken last night was designed to alleviate that threat, the situation in the Middle East remains highly volatile. Stability in the region is a priority.

Canada calls on parties to return immediately to the negotiating table and reach a diplomatic solution to end this crisis. As G7 leaders agreed in Kananaskis, the resolution of the Iranian crisis should lead to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza.

A shameful response from @mark-carney.bsky.social.

He can’t say he stands up for international law while justifying US breaches of it.

How does he expect Iran to trust the bargaining table when the US ended the JCPOA, Israel killed its negotiator, and the US says recent diplomacy was a ruse?

Farage and Starmer agree over border security

[photo caption] Farage speaks from the benches in the Commons

The leader of Reform UK Nigel Farage is now speaking about undocumented migrants, which he calls a β€œmatter of national security”.
He asks whether the prime minister agrees it’s time to declare the situation in the English Channel as a national security β€œemergency”.
Starmer agrees that the situation is serious and says the last government lost control of the borders.
He says Labour’s borders bill will be the first to give terrorism-like powers to law enforcement, describing it as the β€œmost far-reaching provision for law enforcement to defend and secure our borders”.

In 2015, the UK was the leading country on LGBTI human rights in Europe according to IGLA-Europe, with 86%.

In 2025, we have dropped to 46%.

The conservative movement has turned against reality on every scientific issue of our time, from gun violence to climate change to epidemiology.

If campuses are ideologically homogenous, it's not because academia has ostracized conservatives. It's because conservatives have ostracized academia.

Categories used by the state to sort people into boxes are never neutral.

Some thoughts on the UK Supreme Court case ruling and the wider anti-trans campaign to narrow sex and gender categories in policy, data and law.
