A green and white Washington State car ferry cruises on a calm Puget Sound at golden hour. Tahoma/Rainier rises behind above a dark green treeline. The snow level is low in the middle of summer.
I love the simple symmetry of car ferries. Endlessly #alternating bow and stern between each trip.

Lawrence’s Goldfinch perched on a branch
Lawrence’s Goldfinch tilting its head inquisitively
Los Pinetos Trail, crest overlooking the North San Fernando Valley. So many beautiful creatures up here! Red-shouldered hawks, ravens, lesser and Lawrence’s goldfinches, scrub and Steller’s jays, phainopepla, two coast horned lizards, and hooded orioles. Some beautiful bugs as well - I’m not as fluent in handling those IDs, but I try to record what I can nonetheless.
Descent down the “Viper trail” portion of the Los Pinetos Loop - this section was really nasty, very steep, very slaggy, with lots of scrabble and loose dirt. The descent can be really difficult without poles, and should be taken extremely slowly with a low center of gravity! I got down just fine - but my knees and feet are howling from the effort.

Tackled the Los Pinetos Loop today! 6.9 miles, 1,768’ elevation gain, 2h48m total time. Thrilled to get a good snap of Lawrence’s Goldfinch, too!

A young Black phoebe is perched on a fence. Its belly is white, its chest, head, and wings are black.
Phoebe!
I think this is a youngster from our long visiting Black phoebe. That one would wait on the fence and catch snacks on the fly if I tossed well 😊
This one is not so bold, yet 🤞
Have not seen our long visiting phoebe for a month, sigh

A photograph of an off-white, wooden cottage, mostly blocked from view by a thick pollinator garden. There is grass lawn in the foreground, hackberry and pecan trees in the background and a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. Lots of greens and blue.
I'm going to start calling it my privacy meadow.

A small brown, orange, and white skipper butterfly clings to the bottom of a spiky, cream-colored, ball-shaped blossom of a buttonbush, with a green background.
Buttonbush is always, ALWAYS a pollinator magnet when its in bloom. It likes wet soil, and probably has delicious nectar. This Silver-spotted Skipper thinks so, anyway. Saul Lake Bog Preserve, Michigan. #insects #butterflies #nativeplants #photography
