what's the difference between the JF- and the NF-? For some reason i remember the NF-104 being the one used for high altitude work.

Cook extraordinaire moonlighting as Aerospace engineer. Aviation history buff.

03.02.2025 15:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Fun read. Corky Meyer tested Grumman aircraft during the Golden age of that company. I enjoy reading test pilot's stories because you tend to learn tidbits not found in other aircraft books.

I picked up Bud Anderson's book for $5 in a used book store and started reading. For reference i have read Bob Hoover's book and of course Yeager's. So far I'm pleasantly surprised.

Too bad it was penalized by using piston engines- i always thought it was such an interesting design.
14.01.2025 19:12 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There are approximately 100 cutaways covering the period between the Morane-Saulnier Type N and the F-18, with a concise but well-written description by the authors. My copy was a $4.29 used book store find :)

25.12.2024 22:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'm reading this book and I hope it gets better. So far it's a lot of puff, and some not-so-accurate bits on the history of stealth. But then I get to this part here... Is it me or is the given figure for supercruise claim outlandish?
25.12.2024 22:14 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0π Good, and with that I have used all of the flight dynamics knowledge I have π

16.12.2024 21:05 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I love taking a peek at other aviation enthusiasts' bookshelves. Is the far right book a biography of Richard Vogt? He ranks among the most interesting aircraft designers as far as i am concerned.
15.12.2024 16:27 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0That's great news! If I may, though, the book description was a bit thin. I am certain it will be interesting, coming from you, but do you have a synopsis somewhere?

Helicopters are hard, but Prouty explained them brilliantly in his Vertiflite columns compendiums.

I am a sucker for aircraft cutaways!
At least they're not asking for the V/STOL variant yet...
09.12.2024 19:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0That's a good one. I also enjoyed the one in the same series about V/STOL aircraft in the Soviet Navy by Mike Hirschberg.
09.12.2024 18:46 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Considering how fond of the F-35C the Navy seems to be...
08.12.2024 20:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It's a good thing the inboard part of a rotor does not do much for hover thrust...
The fairing probably helps with the significant hinges and actuation mechanism required for this to work.

Biographies of Japanese pilots get less attention than European or US counterparts; this one was excellent
I think that's the report i was thinking of. Or at least the drawing looks familiar.

Here's what our company's grey beard aerodynamicist had to say: "Yes, this was the ATT program. Boeing, Lockheed, and Convair did design studies based on a NASA configuration, which was the subject to extensive wind tunnel tests."
04.12.2024 16:55 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I thought i saw something similar on the NTRS...and for some reason i remember Whitcomb being associated with it. But maybe i'm conflating two things.

Not one book, but a series. My prized possession is a 1942 copy of Jane's my mentor gave me.

30.11.2024 22:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There was a scathing note from a Boeing engineer shortly after merger, that's become somewhat famous. It accurately predicted a lot of what eventually happened. It's in my files, but i can't remember the title. I'll dig around...
